You could very well say Oscar De La Hoya isn’t just being a critic he’s being a bit of a jealous one. With the blockbuster showdown between Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez dominating headlines, De La Hoya’s recent comments about the fighters being “too friendly” during promotion have raised eyebrows. But dig a little deeper, and the real issue might be that he’s not the one promoting the fight.
As the head of Golden Boy Promotions and a man who once promoted Canelo himself Oscar De La Hoya has never been one to bite his tongue. But when it comes to a historic superfight that he’s not involved in, his remarks start to sound less like objective critique and more like sour grapes.
Expect this to become a pattern as the fight draws closer. When you’re on the outside looking in at the biggest fight of the year, the commentary might not always come from a place of analysis it might come from a bruised ego.
DE LA HOYA SLAMS CANELO-CRAWFORD PROMOTION
Oscar De La Hoya: "No boxing fan wants to see 2 fighters having dinner together. We want bad blood, we want anticipation, we want to feel like an actual war is about to happen. Not f***ing caviar and champagne together… Here's the… pic.twitter.com/LGy8nuOWg1

“So the ridiculous promotion of Canelo versus Crawford has given me lots of good ammunition,” Oscar De La Hoya began. “First, let’s take a look back to last week. When this photo was taken of Canelo and Crawford having dinner together like they’re best friends?! Like they’re buddies, like they were family friends! I mean, can you imagine Muhammad Ali or like Joe Frazier having dinner together? Can you imagine Mike Tyson and Mitch Green before a brawl? What the fk. No boxing fan wants to see two fighters having dinner together. We want bad blood, we want anticipation, we want to feel like an actual war is about to happen, not f***g caviar and champagne together.”
Oscar De La Hoya should feel some type of way seeing the man that he helped mold into a star receive his biggest payday without him. There’s no way he could have made this fight happen. By competing with a billionaire, even the ‘Golden Boy’ pockets aren’t that deep.
