Thursday night featured an interesting video post on social media from none other than Golden Boy Promotions’ Chairman & CEO Oscar De La Hoya. He has been vocal on social media as of late, and what triggered his posts was the WBC announcing that they ordered a WBC lightweight title fight between the champion Shakur Stevenson (22-0, 10 KOs) and their number one contender William Zepeda (31-0, 27 KOs). That move by the WBC sparked De La Hoya on Monday to go on X and post, “Check this out, William Zepeda is so bad as# he has four sanctioning bodies to choose from. Nobody will tell him who he must fight next.”
If that wasn’t enough, De La Hoya decided that on Thursday night, he would start a video series called “Clap Back Thursdays,” where he would select “the dumbest, lowest insults” people can throw at him and respond on his social media accounts. In the first video of the series, De La Hoya did not hold back and had some pointed things to say about a few topics.
De La Hoya said, “Let’s start with the WBC ordering Shakur Stevenson vs. William Zepeda. Ordering? What does that mean? They ordered Canelo vs. Benavidez like three years ago, and that hasn’t happened. William will make his decision very soon, and he has three other options. Shakur Stevenson, you’re a free agent, you’re a great fighter, a great talent, but not for me. I believe when somebody says you’re not fighting for the public, I cannot promote. Now, there are a lot of rumors going around that the Saudis are going to take over boxing and buy out every single promoter. Well, guess what? I haven’t been approached so don’t believe everything you read.”

It’ll be interesting to see if De La Hoya continues this week after week and what his responses are on whichever topics are thrown at him. For now, fans can have their popcorn ready as Thursday nights look to be the Oscar De La Hoya show.
