Paul Smith believes Jake Paul’s boxing journey has hit its ceiling after his latest defeat to Anthony Joshua.
Former British champion Paul Smith believes Jake Paul’s boxing journey may have reached its end after his latest defeat, saying the YouTuber-turned-fighter has no clear path forward in the professional ranks.
Paul suffered his second professional defeat earlier this month, losing comprehensively in a one-sided contest against Anthony Joshua that drew criticism from analysts and fans.
Speaking on talkBOXING, Paul Smith said the result — and the way it unfolded — might signal “the popping of the Jake Paul bubble.”
Smith praised Paul’s ability to generate attention and financial success but said his boxing credibility has reached its limit.
“It could be (a popping of the Jake Paul bubble), as well as the way the fight ended. That could be the last straw. It wasn’t a close fight; it wasn’t competitive. It wasn’t really a fight.
“It’s obviously Jake Paul. What he’s done, I’ve said it time and again, you can do nothing but applaud him. But I think that’s run its course now. What’s he going to do now? Go down to cruiserweight…
“You’re going to get more criticism for fighting an unknown that no one knows, and then losing again. He’s not going to win a world title!”
He questioned what direction Paul could take next, warning that any move down to cruiserweight or against lesser-known opponents would only bring more criticism.
Paul Smith’s comments echo growing sentiment within boxing circles that Jake Paul’s in-ring career may give way to his growing role as a promoter.
The American has been praised for bringing new audiences to the sport through his company, Most Valuable Promotions, and for signing fighters such as Amanda Serrano and Ashton Sylve.
Smith said Paul’s impact on boxing cannot be ignored, but that his own fighting career is unlikely to progress further.
The comments come as Paul faces questions about his next move, with analysts suggesting his promotional work may become his long-term focus rather than a return to the ring.
