Elite Underdog Promotions is set to host its first professional boxing event, ‘The Next Generation of Fighters,’ at the Alameda County Fairgrounds on May 24. With the goal of giving underdogs a stage to shoot for the pedestals of boxing giants in mind, promoter and trainer, Ali Benjamin, hopes that his latest venture will pave the way to revamp the sport of boxing.
Talking to FightsATW, Benjamin opened up about his journey in boxing and his latest endeavor with his Elite Underdog Promotions Banner.
“I started competing when I was 8 years old. I competed all the way till I was about 15-16 years old. I got away from boxing just making poor decisions,” he said, reminiscing about the hard lessons that he had to learn. “Later, I came back as a coach, and I started really preaching to my youth and to the adults, just to you know, stick with the boxing. And to not make the same mistakes that I did, and that’s really my driving force.”
He highlighted that he was a coach first, despite having to wear countless hats, including that of a promoter. Sharing his hopes for the upcoming endeavor under his promotional banner, Benjamin revealed that he wanted to put 50-50 fights back on the map while giving Bay Area fighters opportunities.
The promotion aims to give underdogs well-deserved opportunities and to put up competitive fights even at club show level, in turn getting people excited for the spectacle.
“We preach in giving the underdog a fair shake, because in boxing too many times we know that the guys on the B side don’t get a fair shake. We want it to be fair. Making boxing fair, making it really entertaining. And Elite Underdog Promotions is going to bring that to boxing,” he said.
With the promotion, Benjamin aims to work at a grassroots level in the community and help the local talent get their direly needed opportunities to shine and find a future in the sport of boxing.
“The main catalyst is really the 50-50 fights and giving all local fighters the opportunity, both on the A side and the B side. So many times, yes, of course we have to bring opponents in because there’s not enough. But we are the show with the most local guys fighting local guys, which is what the community wants to see,” he said.
