In what was an incredible featherweight title fight, Nick Ball (20-0-1, 11 KOs) squeezed out a split decision victory over Raymond Ford (15-1-1, 8 KOs). The judges saw this one: 115-113 for Ford, 115-113 for Ball & 115-113 for Ball. He is now the WBA featherweight champion and has some big fights ahead.
Ball started the opening round aggressively, but Ford began pumping the right jab and landing four punch combinations once things settled down. Ford did a great job of keeping the fight at mid-range and not allowing Ball to get in close. Ball came out aggressive once again in the second round and landed some hard right uppercuts while consistently throwing four to five punch combinations. Ford dedicated his attack to the body of Ball while leading with a quick right jab.
A cut developed under Ford’s right eye in the third round. Ball was overwhelming Ford with eye-catching punches while Ford tried to counter-punch his way out of danger. Some of Ball’s punches got through, which led to the cut on Ford. Ball dominated the fourth round with his activity.
Ball had a big fifth round and opened a cut over the left eye of Ford. Ball’s uppercut kept doing big damage. The same can be said about the sixth round, but Ford regained momentum in the seventh. Ford landed a huge, straight left hand that busted Ball’s nose and stunned him for a while. Once Ball regained his senses, he came right back with four punch combinations.
Ford had another effective round as the eighth saw him landing big 1-2 combinations down the middle that busted up Ball as his nose kept bleeding. Ford began to use his footwork and distance to evade Ball’s punches in the ninth round and step into his own punches. Ball started to miss more, and Ford landed the cleaner punches.
Ball had a hard time finding Ford in the tenth round. Ford kept his distance and landed some good, clean combinations while making Ball miss with his punches. The 11th round was the hardest to score as both men had their moments. Just when you thought Ford was in complete control, Ball would come roaring back. The last round was a round-of-the-year candidate as both fighters went blow for blow, and they were each hurt at different moments of the round but kept pressing forward.
Ball comes victorious, and Ford now looks to move up to 130 as he has overwelcomed his stay at the featherweight division.
