Ricardo Malajika defends his IBO super-flyweight title on August 9 against Jayson Mama, as we look at how the fight could play out.

Malajika is riding an impressive seven-fight win streak. Malajika claimed the IBO super-flyweight title by defeating Marcel Braithwaite and then moved down in weight to claim the IBO flyweight title with a win over Jackson Chauke in his last fight.

Meanwhile, Mama enters the fight after falling short in his previous world title bid. In 2021, he fought Sunny Edwards for the IBF Flyweight Title but lost by unanimous decision. Since that defeat, Mama has bounced back strongly, securing four wins in his last six bouts, including a technical draw against Michael Bravo in his most recent outing. Here is how the fight could transpire.

Approach

Malajika is known for his speed, constant pressure, and numerous combinations. He is also a switch-hitter, capable of fighting effectively from either a conventional or southpaw stance. While he has a high knockout ratio, many of his stoppages come from the sheer accumulation of punishment rather than one-punch stoppages, which has taken his record to 15-2-0 (11 KOs). For Malajika, the key will be to use his fast footwork and aggressive tempo.

“I want to be five-time world champion, so wherever the opportunity is, I’ll grab it. It’s about sacrifices…I believe he’s (Jesse “Bam” Rodriguez) the best, but he hasn’t fought me yet, so we can’t say he’s the best. I feel like I’m the best [Laughs] The only way to find out is me and him in the ring. Anybody, anybody who wants to fight me, I’m ready, my coach is ready, you can call me 2 hours and say the fight is in one hour and we’ll pick up and be ready to go. Even if it’s a heavyweight,” Malajika stated

Mama’s Approach

Mama’s game plan will likely be centered on a measured, tactical approach. He’s fought at the highest level, including a bout against the slick Sunny Edwards, so he knows how to handle a high-pressure environment. Mama will need to be patient, looking to counter Malajika’s aggression and exploit any openings. His solid fundamentals and proven durability will be his greatest assets. Fighting in his native South Africa, Malajika will have the crowd in his corner. This could be a huge factor, setting up an intriguing fight.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for me to compete for the IBO world title. I am dedicated to training rigorously and fighting with everything I’ve got. My ultimate goal is to bring the belt home to the Philippines and make my country proud,” Mama said
