Ryan Garcia recently sparked headlines with his blunt critique of undefeated welterweight champion Terence Crawford, labeling him “overhyped” and “boring.” Garcia claims that Crawford’s fighting style lacks excitement and is a waste of fans’ money. The young boxing star didn’t hold back, even daring Crawford to face him in the ring if he disagreed with his assessment.
In Ryan Garcia’s opinion fans are wrong about Terence Crawford, especially after the fight with Errol Spence. In that fight, fans considered Crawford’s performance as a true reflection of his style of fighting. However, according to him, he was too assertive against Spence because the latter was not fully fit after his car accident. Often, Crawford fights differently, not as aggressively as the fans saw in a fight against Spence.
It was unexpected that Ryan Garcia went on taunting Terence Crawford asking to see him in the ring, but he is not waiting for that fight to happen. Crawford has said on many occasions that he is looking to fight with Canelo Alvarez, which has a lucrative potential. He also said that Crawford has never been able to garner the PPV figures that he had.
There have been rumors in the past few nights that Crawford’s fight against Israil Madrimov performed very poorly in PPV sales and they barely managed to fill up BMO Stadium in Los Angeles. He didn’t hold back, taking a sharp jab at Crawford by suggesting that the only real opponent he’s ever beaten is a diminished version of Errol Spence, he said that:
“Terence Crawford really hasn’t beat anybody other than Errol Spence, who went through a car crash. Name 1 guy he beat other than Spence that’s well known! Crawford ain’t like that, “said Ryan Garcia to the Say Cheese YouTube channel about Terence Crawford.
“Terence Crawford hasn’t really beaten anybody other than Spence, and that’s after he went through a car crash, Garcia said. Name one well-known fighter he’s beaten besides Spence. He’s overhyped. You’re wasting everybody’s money. If you think I’m wrong, come fight me.”
Ryan Garcia’s confidence is at an all-time high after his recent victory over Devin Haney, a fight he claims many underestimated him. Reflecting on the win, he said that:
“I had a belief in myself, and nobody is going to take that away from me.”
It was also interesting to learn about his status in boxing; he was quick to assert his position putting himself amongst the most popular athletes today. He said that one must strive to remain relevant, especially with social media. Ryan Garcia aims to etch his name into the minds of boxing fans, so while his remarks may be bold, they certainly fit his strategy.
While he goes on to name other big-name fighters like Terence Crawford, fans should expect more of such audacious moves from the young boxer who is out to establish himself as one of the future faces of modern boxing. It will be interesting to see whether or not Crawford will react to the challenge that Ryan Garcia issued him. The drama is far from being over.
