Rolando Romero (16-2, 13 KOs) might not have been the first fighter in Ryan Garcia’s (24-1-1, 2) KOs) mind.
‘KingRy’ is set to clash with Rolly at Times Square in New York on May 2. The fight will mark Garcia’s first appearance inside the ring following his yearlong suspension due to PED usage in his fight against Devin Haney (31-0-1, 15 KOs). While Garcia vs. Romero will undoubtedly be a fiery spectacle for fans, the former WBC interim lightweight champion confessed that Romero was not his first choice as an appointment.
Talking at the recent promotional event for the fight, Garcia named the fighter that he was actually looking forward to facing.
“As far as Rolly as an opponent, he was not my first choice. It was Pitbull Cruz, but things played out a different way. I’m really focused on whooping Devin Haney’s ass again. That’s all I’m really worried about not even to redeem myself, just to cement that Ostarine BS which you probably set up,” he said.
Garcia is, however, not taking his upcoming opponent lightly. He mentioned that he is training to face the best version of Romero. But Garcia isn’t expecting Romero to last too long against him.
“I’m still going to train my best, but everybody wants to see the rematch and that’s where my heart is at. So, I’ve just got to prepare well. I know I’m the better fighter, and I’m going to knock him out,” he said.
Romero, on the other hand, feels like Garcia isn’t taking his boxing career seriously. In fact, during the same event, he accused him of putting his other pursuits ahead of potentially becoming a champion in the sport.
“I’m very impressed, but he still hasn’t been a champion, though. The only time he had an opportunity to be a champion was against Gervonta, but instead of trying to sacrifice the extra pound to try and make 135, he decided not to,” Romero said while talking about Garcia not working hard enough to secure titles, “With Devin, we clearly know he didn’t try to, and he doesn’t want to be a champion. He wants to be a model. The only thing I’m interested in is Ryan Garcia at this moment.”
