Serhii Bohachuk vs Vergil Ortiz Jr.: Who Wins?
Joe Camporeale-USA TODAY Sports

One of the best action fights on paper will take place on Saturday night at the Mandalay Bay Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Interim WBC junior middleweight champion Serhii Bohachuk (24-1, 23 KOs) will take on the undefeated Vergil Ortiz Jr. (21-0, 21 KOs) in a fight that has a high probability of ending in a knockout. Two knockout artists go head-to-head to see who the tougher fighter is, and fans can’t wait to see what happens and who comes out victorious. The only question that remains is, who wins?

Serhii Bohachuk Doesn’t Run Away From The Smoke But Toward It

It’s a rarity these days for fighters who reach a certain level of success to take on the biggest challenges consecutively. That is Bohachuk, as his promoter, Tom Loeffler from 360 Promotions, took the kid gloves off a while ago when it came to matching Bohachuk. It’s the reason he’s made it this far, and although he learned some hard lessons early in his career, like suffering a TKO loss to Brandon Adams in 2021, Bohachuk kept asking for the tough fights that favored him with the WBC and their rankings. In March, Bohachuk went to war with Brian Mendoza in a fight he won unanimously, but it also showed that he could go blow for blow with the division’s toughest. Soon after Tim Tszyu pulled out of the Ortiz fight, Bohachuk did not hesitate to take on the challenge that he really didn’t need to at that very moment.

What does Bohachuk have to do to win on Saturday? He will have to be the tougher fighter and beat the fight out of Ortiz. That will be challenging, but it may not be as difficult if Ortiz had another bad weight cut. Bohachuk needs to work the body early and test Ortiz’s conditioning. If he can weather the storm early, Bohachuk may have a shot at stopping Ortiz late in the fight.

Can Vergil Ortiz Jr. Put It All Together For The Title Fight That Has Haunted Him For So Long?

Ortiz was a blue-chip prospect in only a few fights in the junior welterweight division. The problem was that whenever he was ready for a title shot or an eliminator, Ortiz would grow out of his body, forcing him to move up. Now, at junior middleweight, he finally has a chance at a title, even if it’s an interim one. Some insiders have mentioned he is fortunate for this fight as they believe he will be fighting at middleweight in the very near future. With all of the health problems he has endured, everyone will be paying attention to the weigh-in tomorrow morning to see if Ortiz will make the junior middleweight limit of 154 pounds. If he doesn’t, there is a reported six-figure penalty for every pound he is over. Although there are major concerns about Ortiz’s weight, which are merited due to his history, it doesn’t appear he will have any issues tomorrow morning on the scales.

With that being said, what does Ortiz need to do in order to secure his first title? Ortiz needs to be smart and throw his combinations behind his stiff left jab. Once he does that, Ortiz must work in the left hook to the body and break down Bohachuk. This will soften him up for a chance at stopping Bohachuk late in the fight.

Although Bohachuk is a helluva fighter, it’s just Ortiz’s time and he’s fought the better opposition on the way up. Ortiz is going to slowly breakdown Bohachuk and stop him between rounds eight and ten.
