Natasha Jonas has not boxed since her loss to Lauren Price, so should she retire?
Price suffered a one-sided unanimous decision defeat, losing her IBF and WBC Welterweight belts. Before the fight, she had beaten Ivana Habazin to unify at 147, the second division she had done this in following the feat at 154. However, Price was all wrong for Jonas, as Lauren will now target a bout with Mikaela Mayer for the Undisputed Welterweight Title. Jones is expected to retire, given the 40-year-old will find it tough to find a title shot. Price was also slower to the punch, showing that perhaps age had caught up with her. However, retirement may not be on the horizon.
Jonas could move up to 154 to take on Mary Spencer. The latter is the WBA champion at 154, giving Jonas a world title shot. However, Spencer is no pushover. Her record stands at 10-2, with 6 KOs to her name. She has won her last three fights, ending her two-fight losing streak, thus providing Natasha with a challenge.
Equally, there is the Cecilia Brækhus fight. Brækhus is the former undisputed welterweight champion. She has the interim WBC super welterweight title presently. A win gives Jonas a title opportunity. Brækhus is an experienced operator with a 38-2-1 record that includes 9 KOs.
Alternatively, Jonas could face Mayer if the latter were to beat Price. Jonas beat Mayer in their 2024 clash, with many questioning the decision. Jonas was seen as getting the rub of the green since she was fighting in her hometown of Liverpool. If Mayer becomes undisputed, Jonas may fancy that fight. Either way, Jonas has not decided her future yet.
“I think I am going to wait for a few results. Joe (Gallagher) has mentioned going back up to 154 and potentially facing Mary Spencer or Cecilia Brækhus, or even fighting Mikaela again. Personally, I think the two biggest fights out there would be either Katie Taylor or the rematch with Mikaela.
“They are probably the only two fights that would get me up for training again. Pride, ego, to go out with a win and leave the sport on my own terms. I am out of contract with Boxxer, so I am free to do what I want. The lack of opportunities to get the big fights that I really want. If I fight again, it has to mean something,” Jonas said
