Should There Be A Eubank Vs. Benn Rematch?
PA Images/Alamy Images

Chris Eubank Jr. could rematch Conor Benn in September as we look at whether there is a case for a second fight.

Eubank secured a unanimous decision victory to give Benn the first loss of his career. He was coming down to 160 pounds, with a 10-pound rehydration clause. He failed to make the 160 pound limit. While he did abide by the rehydration clause, it was clear during the fight that Eubank was not at his optimal level. Just before the fight had started, he was seen drinking large amounts of water, showing that he was not fully rehydrated.

Eubank Vs. Benn

Chris Eubank Sr. had expressed worries over the fight going ahead before it happened, despite his eventual appearance on fight night. Benn was moving up one weight class from 154 pounds, having boxed at junior middleweight for his last two fights. However, it was not enough for him to overpower Eubank. There is an argument that a rematch can only happen if there is no rehydration clause.

Eubank has already shown that he cannot make 160 pounds at this stage of his career, as fights at super middleweight are more likely. There is the opportunity to face off against Canelo Alvarez in 2026 in a massive stadium fight in the UK. Equally, Benn could move back down to 147 to fight at his natural weight class. A fight against the WBC Welterweight Champion Mario Barrios has also been suggested.

Meanwhile, a bout against Jaron Ennis has also been talked about since Boots is with Matchroom. Benn has shown that he cannot stop 154 pounders, having not done so against Peter Dobson and Rodolfo Orozco. The same can now be said against a weight-drained Eubank.

Eubank has also put the Eubank-Benn rivalry to bed. He has extended his family legacy by doing what his father, Eubank Sr., had done by getting a win. Eubank Jr. could arguably only go down from here if he were to rematch Benn, giving him an opportunity to gain his revenge. However, if Eubank wants to secure those big paydays, there are not many big fights out there for him aside from Canelo. And that has left boxing fans with a mixed take on whether there should be a rematch.
