Five months ago, Puerto Rican boxing star Subriel Matias (20-2, 20 KOs) shockingly lost his IBF super lightweight world title to Australian Liam Paro. In his comeback fight after the devastating loss to Paro, Matias, 32, from Fajardo, PR, blasted Roberto Ramirez (26-3-1, 19 KOs), 31, from San Diego, California, through two rounds, forcing the referee to put an end to the fight.
In the opening seconds of the first round, Ramirez shocked the Puerto Rican spectators when he rocked Matias with a straight right hand. The next minute was scary for Matias and his fans as the Mexican sent Matias backpedaling to the ropes after landing a series of stiff punches that seemed to hurt the former world champion.
Amid the barrage of hard punches from Ramirez, Matias was able to land a few hard shots of his own and finally get Ramirez to back off. In the middle of the first round, Matias stalked Ramirez and got inside the Californian’s long reach. In the last minute of the first round, Matias landed a series of combinations, turning the fight’s momentum in his favor. In the last second of the round, Matias landed a hard left hook that stunned Ramirez and sent him stumbling back to his corner.
In the second round, Matias immediately pounced on Ramirez and dropped him twice, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
During the post-fight interview, Matias said he recovered from the initial onslaught and felt fine the whole time. He also stated that he would like the opportunity to fight for a world title in his next outing.
Jeyvier Cintrón (12-1 6 KOs), 29, from Bayamon, PR, earned a unanimous decision over Rashib Martinez Valdez (23-3-1 11 KOs), 27, Monterey, Nuevo Leon, MX. Cintron set the tone for the fight in the first round by dropping Martinez with a three-punch combination. Cintron emptied his boxing tool bag and dominated Martinez for the remainder of the fight. Martinez tried to thwart Cintron’s assault by pressing the action in the final round in a feeble attempt to knockout the Puerto Rican but found himself on the canvas again in the last round. In only his second fight in the previous five years, Cintron’s performance was nothing less than masterful.
Alfredo Santiago (15-2, 6 KOs), 30, from Fajardo, PR, blasted Pedro Campa (36-3-1, 24 KOs), 32, from Hermosillo, Sonora, MX, earning a first knockout victory over his Mexican rival.
In a controversial decision, Abimael Ortiz (10-1-1 5 KOs) from Cidra, PR, defeated Kevin Gonzalez (27-1-1 14 KOs), 26, Culiacán, Sonora, MX. Ortiz and Gonzalez both had moments in an even-contested contest, but it seemed like Gonzalez was getting the better of the exchanges as he pressed the action over the more tactical style of Ortiz. The fight could’ve gone either way, but many felt that Gonzalez should’ve gotten the decision over Ortiz, including Matias, who expressed in his post-fight interview that he thought Gonzalez won the fight.
Luis Rodriguez, 28, from Toa Alta, PR (14-0 11 KOs) defeated Marcos Vazquez 35, Tijuana, Baja, MX (20-2-1 10 KOs). In a fight mostly dominated by Rodriguez’s effective jab and accurate combination pouching, the end came in the fifth round when the Mexican’s corner team stopped the fight. Vazquez was knocked down three times and was not answering any of the barrage of punches, forcing his team to stop the fight.
The Mexico vs Puerto Rican boxing rivalry thrived tonight in Bayamon, PR. It wasn’t a good night for our Mexican brethren as the Puerto Rican fighters swept all five fights in this card. Matias won the fight but left many fans wondering if he can genuinely rebound and capture another world title after getting hurt by Ramirez in the opening round. Is Matias genuinely ready for a world title shot in his next outing? That question cannot be answered as quickly tonight as it once was when discussing Matias.
