After a year on the sidelines, Terence Crawford (41-0, 31 KOs) is stepping back into the ring with a vengeance to face boxing behemoth Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (62-2-2, 39 KOs) in an undoubtedly explosive showdown. Despite his flawless record and relentless drive, Crawford knows the spotlight isn’t in his corner, and that’s precisely how he likes it.
With WWE superstar Seth Rollins as the guest host, the recent episode of the Rich Eisen Show saw Crawford talking about why he’d always consider himself the underdog regardless of his unbeaten track record.
“I could be the favorite, but in my mind, I’m the underdog. I’m going in there to prove a point,” he said. In fact, he even believes that facing Alvarez in his weight class is his way of keeping himself on the edge. “In my mind, I’m already down two rounds. I got to make up for those two rounds with the work I put in.”
With the weight jump and the host of complexities it brings, Crawford is ensuring that his training is on point, especially his cardio. He is back in Colorado Springs, CO, soaking in the benefits of altitude training (undoubtedly his favourite since 2013). However, this comes with its struggles too, as he highlighted that being “all business” in Colorado meant staying away from family and all the comforting familiarities of home.
With a work ethic like this, it is no surprise as to why he has cemented his position as one of the greats in the sport of boxing. However, he is certainly not letting it take away his humility. When asked whether he is the greatest of all time, he only had one answer.
“No, not the greatest of all time. That’s Muhammad Ali’s spot. I do think I am the best right now, but Ali is the greatest,”he said.
Meanwhile, the boxing community has high hopes for the spectacle that this super fight is going to be. Boxing phenom, Ryan Garcia, was recently seen expressing his excitement about the fight and (cue drumroll) picking a potential winner.
“This is the first time Canelo is actually bigger than someone in a long time. So it’s like, the weights are lifted off and he can fight even more freely,” he said while talking to FightHubTV. “When you have two great fighters, great things can happen. But I could see Crawford getting knocked out like Amir Khan style (reference to him getting knocked out by Alvarez)”.
