OMAHA, Neb. — Just hours after a citywide parade celebrated his historic victory over Canelo Alvarez, undisputed boxing champion Terence “Bud” Crawford found himself in handcuffs on the streets of his hometown.
Early Sunday morning, Omaha police stopped Crawford’s vehicle for what they described as “reckless driving.” According to the department’s statement, an officer spotted a firearm on the driver’s side floorboard during the stop and ordered Crawford and his passengers out at gunpoint. Crawford, who was turning 38 that same day, was briefly placed in handcuffs before being cited for reckless driving.
Police later confirmed the firearm in Crawford’s car was legally owned. As was another carried by a member of his security team.

Footage of the incident quickly spread online, showing the three-division undisputed champion being ordered from his vehicle at gunpoint. The clip triggered widespread criticism and raised concerns about community-police relations in Omaha.
Mayor John Ewing issued a statement acknowledging the seriousness of the situation:
“My heart dropped in learning of this end to an otherwise wonderful day celebrating our city’s world boxing champion. We must ensure that every resident, no matter who they are, feels safe and respected in Omaha.”
Police Chief Todd Schmaderer pledged a full internal affairs investigation into the handling of the stop.
Unfortunately the incident overshadowed what had been a day of triumph and celebration. Just a week earlier, Crawford stunned the boxing world by defeating Alvarez to become the first man to capture undisputed crowns in three separate weight classes. His victory at Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium drew a $47 million gate and reportedly 41 million Netflix viewers.
Omaha honored Crawford with a massive victory parade Saturday afternoon, culminating in a birthday celebration downtown attended by city officials. Hours later, the celebration turned sour when Crawford rang in his 38th birthday in police custody before being released.
