The Rematch Is Set: Oleksandr Usyk vs Tyson Fury 2 Lands On December 21

The much-discussed rematch of one of the most competitive heavyweight fights in recent years will occur on December 21 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Undisputed heavyweight champion Oleksandr Usyk (22-0, 14 KOs) will likely only defend three of the four titles against Tyson Fury (34-1-1, 24 KOs). The IBF was set to strip Usyk of his title after it was made known that he wouldn’t face Filip Hrgovic (17-0, 14 KOs), who is overdue for a shot at the IBF crown. Usyk has submitted an exemption request to be allowed to face Fury in a rematch while still holding onto the IBF title. We will soon find out if that will be approved or denied as Hrgovic is set to face Daniel Dubois (20-2, 19 KOs) on Saturday, which could potentially be for the IBF title.

Meanwhile, Turki Alalshikh took to X to formally announce Usyk-Fury 2, a fight that is even more anticipated than the first one.

“The rematch between the Undisputed Champion Oleksandr Usyk and the Champion Tyson Fury is now scheduled on the 21 of December 2024 during Riyadh Season…The world will watch another historical fight again…Our commitment to boxing fans continues…We hope you enjoy it…”

The December 21 date makes sense, as the October date floating around during the in-ring post-fight interview was unrealistic. Both fighters took a beating that night and likely left a piece of themselves in the ring. December gives both fighters about three months to rest before returning to camp for one of the biggest rematches in recent times. Can Fury do anything different this time to have the fight swing in his favor? Can Usyk replicate that performance even though he had to go through hell to see success late in the fight? All questions that will be answered on December 21 as the right to be called the heavyweight king will be on the line once again.
