On Saturday night, there are a ton of questions to be answered as a potential future junior middleweight world title challenger will likely come from the winner of Tim Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) vs. Joey Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs) on Prime Video in the U.S. and select countries.

Which Version of Tim Tszyu Are We Going To See?

There is no telling what version of Tszyu we will see after two brutal back-to-back losses in 2024, one of which cost him the WBO title. The TKO loss to Bakhram Murtazaliev in October was the most surprising as Tszyu appeared as a shell of the fighter who had gone to war with Sebastian Fundora seven months prior.

Tszyu is an exciting fighter to watch, as his no-nonsense, come-forward style attracts hardcore and casual fans alike. But that style has a shelf life, and at 30, we may be witnessing the beginning of Tszyu’s vulnerability being shown more and more. Maybe all of this is an overreaction, and he blasts out Spencer early in the fight. Who knows, but that is why we watch the fights.

How does Tszyu look sensational in victory? He needs to apply smart pressure from the start and suck up all of the oxygen in the ring. Then, Tszyu needs to go back to dedicating his early offense to the body of his opponents. Spencer keeps his hands high when on defense, which leaves an opportunity for Tszyu to rip shots to the body. Also, Spencer likes to dip low and move his head from side to side, so the body attack should slow all of that movement, which could open up big shots late in the fight.

Joey Spencer Finally Gets His Shot

The 25-year-old Spencer has been a pro for seven years, but it feels like he has been marked as a title contender for years. PBC (Premier Boxing Champions) & TGB Promotions have been pushing Spencer’s name, but his performances weren’t moving the needle. With dates becoming less and less for PBC, Spencer’s time was now for a fight that would either show the potential his backers raved about or what the critics have been saying all along, which is Spencer had already hit his ceiling.

Spencer is going into this fight extremely confident and feels that Tszyu is damaged goods which will give him the advantage on Saturday night in Australia. Can Spencer, with his herkie jerky style, avoid the avalanche that is Tszyu’s offense and score a victory? The better question is, how does he do it?

Spencer has to be smart with how often he engages and use his youth as an advantage by moving around and not giving Tszyu a stationary target. He has to maintain his head movement and take advantage of the moments Tszyu is frustrated, if any, by landing that straight right hand. Tszyu, at times, comes through the front door with his hands down, and if Spencer can land that straight right hand, we could all witness a huge upset.

TIM TSZYU VS JOEY SPENCER PREDICTION

Tszyu will be a little gun-shy at first as he needs to shake off whatever doubts that may still be lingering from his October TKO loss. Once Tszyu gets going, I don’t see Spencer being able to get away from him, and it’ll lead to a late stoppage. Tszyu by TKO in rounds 6-8.
