On March 15 at the M&S Bank Arena, Liverpool, Nick Ball (21-0-1, 13 KOs) successfully defended his WBA featherweight championship against TJ Doheny (26-6, 20 KOs). The entire event was shown on TNT Sports and Discovery+ for those in the UK, while DAZN showed it globally in select countries. Ball has been rumoured with a potential fight against Naoya Inoue, but an unbeaten American featherweight Bruce Carrington has called for an opportunity against the WBA champion.
Ball was relentless against Doheny. The Irishman was an awkward opponent with his wide southpaw stance, but the Liverpudlian was patient. He didn’t waste his work and let impressive combinations go. Ball continued to increase the pace as the fight progressed and he gradually wore down his opponent, forcing Doheny’s corner to withdraw their fighter at the end of round 10. It was an impressive performance from the Everton Red Triangle fighter.
Following his latest title defence, Ball was asked who he would like to fight next: “I don’t know. It’s not up to me, it’s up to Frank [Warren], he’s the best promoter in the world. Anyone,” said the Liverpudlian.
Unbeaten American featherweight Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington (14-0, 8 KOs) is due back in action on March 29 against Enrique Vivas, and he made it clear via his X account that he wants a shot at Ball: “I would love to fight Nick Ball some time this year I just want my shot.”
When speaking to talkSPORT recently, Frank Warren was asked by Ade Oladpio if Nick Ball could be in the conversation to face Naoya Inoue: Yeah, we’ve had conversations about it, but it won’t happen until the end of the year if it does. And he’s got to get through as you just said, a fight on Saturday which fingers crossed he will,” said Warren.
He continued: “Then after that, I’d expect him to come out again and have another fight before the end of the year, and then we can hopefully get the Inoue fight on, which is a fight I really do fancy him in.”
