Unified flyweight champion Ricardo Sandoval has his eyes set on being undisputed, which could happen in 2026. Over the weekend, FightsATW spoke to Sandoval about his experiences leading to the win over Kenshiro Teraji for the WBA & WBC titles and his quest to become the first men’s undisputed flyweight champion.
In July, the 26-year-old Sandoval (30-4, 18 KOs) went into enemy territory to face then unified champion Teraji. It was always going to be a tough fight, and Sandoval got a taste of Teraji’s power when he was floored in the fifth round of their fight. Sandoval would get up and battle his way through adversity, earn a split decision in Japan, and become the unified flyweight champion.
As Sandoval reflected on that night and approaching the championship rounds, he had to stay focused on the task at hand, listening to the corner that had brought him to this point in his career. “Listening to my corner and what they were seeing throughout the fight,” said Sandoval about his thoughts heading into the championship rounds. “There were some close rounds as it was a competitive fight, but in the end, we got the win, which is the most important thing.”
Sandoval did get the win, but not before the close scorecards were read with one judge scoring it for Teraji. Regardless, Sandoval left Japan with two belts and an experience he will likely never forget. “The people over there (Japan) were amazing and respectful,” Sandoval told FightsATW. “It wasn’t the first time going into enemy territory, so I’m used to it. The experience worked out, and we got the win.”
With Sandoval having two of the four titles, naturally, he will try to go after the other two (WBO & IBF). Does Golden Boy have a plan for him to reach those goals as of yet? “I don’t know what is next for me, but unifying is the most important thing for me if it’s possible.
“If we have to fight in Japan to get the other belts, then let’s do it. I want to be the first undisputed flyweight champion.”
After unified minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo’s seventh-round stoppage win, there were conversations about Collazo moving up two weight classes to face Sandoval. If the other two champions are unavailable in early 2026, it wouldn’t be a surprise if we get Sandoval vs. Collazo.
Whichever direction this goes for Sandoval, one thing is certain: the fight will be entertaining and competitive. Sandoval rarely gives a boring fight and leaves it all in the ring. 2026 may be a big year for Sandoval as he continues to raise his profile in boxing.
