Andy Ruiz Jr. is plotting his return to the ring by this year or early 2026, as we look at his next steps.
Ruiz is coming back from hand surgery after fracturing it during his last fight against Jarrell Miller in August 2024, which resulted in a majority draw. The Mexican is back in the gym, as he aims to reach the heights that once made him a unified heavyweight champion. Following his upset victory over Anthony Joshua in December 2019 to claim the WBA, IBF, and WBO titles, Ruiz’s career has been a rollercoaster. He lost the belts in a lackluster rematch with Joshua, in a performance widely criticized for his lack of conditioning. His most notable win since then came in September 2022, a unanimous decision Luis Ortiz.
Ruiz has several intriguing options for his comeback. A fight between Ruiz and Deontay Wilder would be a big bout. Both men are former heavyweight champions known for their explosive power. A matchup between Wilder’s devastating right hand and Ruiz’s fast combinations would guarantee fireworks.
A third fight with Joshua could be a massive event, given their history. While Joshua has moved on and re-established himself as a top heavyweight, there is still a rivalry to be settled with the winner capping off the trilogy as the best fighter. Joshua is looking for his next fight, having recently undergone elbow surgery following his Daniel Dubois defeat.
Zhilei Zhang could also be an option. Zhang has been making a name for himself in the heavyweight division with his size and power. A fight with Zhang would be a difficult and dangerous test for Ruiz. Zhang’s size and strength could neutralize some of Ruiz’s advantages, forcing Ruiz to be more disciplined with his movement and use his boxing skills to avoid Zhang’s power. A win over a rising contender like Zhang would immediately put Ruiz back in the conversation for the biggest fights.
Meanwhile, Ruiz and Joseph Parker have history, with Parker defeating Ruiz by a narrow majority decision in 2016 for the vacant WBO heavyweight title. A rematch between the two would be an opportunity for Ruiz to avenge his first professional loss. Parker has been on a career resurgence himself, so a win over him would be a statement. Either way, Ruiz has plenty to consider.
“My hands are good, feeling good. Mentally, spiritually, I’m feeling good. In September, I’m going to go over there and talk to Turki [Alalshikh] and talk to people who can get me these fights. And hopefully, December, January, we should be in there,” Ruiz said
