What’s Next For Crawford After Beating Canelo?

Terence Crawford has captured the undisputed super middleweight title, handing Canelo Alvarez a shocking unanimous decision loss, as we look at what is next.

Crawford’s victory came after a significant two-weight-class jump, as he entered the ring for the first time at 168 pounds. Just last August, the four-division world champion was competing at 154 pounds, where he secured a unanimous decision over Israil Madrimov. Crawford’s gamble paid off, making him the first male boxer to become an undisputed champion in three different weight classes.

There is the chance for Crawford to run this fight back with Canelo. For Crawford, a rematch is a massive financial payday that could be even more lucrative than the first fight, with the ticket sales likely to skyrocket after his stunning upset. For Canelo, it’s a chance at redemption and an opportunity to reclaim his undisputed title at 168 pounds, a division he has dominated for years.

Another compelling option for Crawford is to return to a lower weight class such as at 154. By moving back down, he could pursue fresh and exciting challenges against top contenders. For example, he could defend his WBA title at 154 against Jaron Ennis. Alternatively, he could face Sebastian Fundora, the WBC Junior Middleweight Champion, provided he beats Keith Thurman in his next fight. These fights, while not carrying the same “mega-fight” status as a Canelo rematch, would allow Crawford to continue fighting.

With his legacy already secured, Crawford could also choose to retire. As an undefeated, three-division undisputed champion, he has arguably nothing left to prove. He has defeated the biggest name in boxing, and walking away on top would be a fitting end to a Hall of Fame career.
