What's next for Gervonta Davis after controversial draw?

Gervonta “Tank” Davis’ undefeated record took a hit on March 1 as he was held to a controversial majority draw against Lamont Roach Jr. A contentious ninth-round incident has fueled debate, leaving Davis with critical decisions about his next move.

The controversy stemmed from an unusual moment when Davis (30-0-1, 28 KOs) unexpectedly took a knee, later claiming hair grease had irritated his eyes. Referee Steve Willis did not rule it a knockdown, a decision that has been widely scrutinized. Had it been scored as such, Roach (25-1-2, 10 KOs) might have edged out a victory on the scorecards. Instead, the judges returned scores of 115-113 for Davis and 114-114 twice, resulting in a majority draw.

"If you voluntarily take a knee and the ref starts counting, it should be a knockdown," Roach said during his post-fight interview. "If that's a knockdown, I win the fight."

Since then, the New York State Athletic Commission has launched an investigation into the officiating and a “technical issue” that prevented an in-fight video review. While the result is unlikely to be overturned, the scrutiny has intensified calls for a rematch.

Initially indicating his openness to a rematch, Davis has since suggested he may pursue another fight before facing his opponent again. However, with mounting pressure and Roach's rising profile, an immediate rematch could be on the horizon. Reports point to a potential bout in late May, though a quick turnaround remains uncertain. Roach, whose performance has bolstered his reputation, would likely welcome another opportunity to settle a fight many believe he should have won.

Beyond a rematch, Davis faces another pressing question: a potential showdown with Shakur Stevenson. The undefeated two-division champion has long called for the fight, and the two have traded blows on social media for years. Fans have eagerly speculated about a clash between the elite boxers, viewing it as a showdown between Davis’ power and Stevenson’s precision.

While a Davis-Stevenson bout would be a marquee event in the lightweight division, negotiations and timing remain significant hurdles. Whether Davis chooses to settle unfinished business with Roach or pivots toward a super fight with Stevenson, his next move will be pivotal — both for his pound-for-pound standing and his long-term legacy in the sport.
