Jack Catterall beat Harlem Eubank Jr., raising question marks over his next steps.
Catterall secured a technical decision win after the fight was stopped in the seventh round. A clash of heads in the sixth led to a massive cut for Catterall, as the fight could not continue. The scorecards had it as 69-65 & 69-66 (x2) in favor of Catterall. The win was the perfect response to Catterall’s defeat against Jose Arnold Barboza Jr. in the fight before. Naturally, the attention will turn towards who is next.
Catterall could target a third fight with Josh Taylor. The pair’s rivalry is tied at 1-1 after Catterall gained his revenge in their last fight. Catterall had arguably won the first fight too, only to get hard done by on the scorecards which prevented him from becoming the Undisputed Junior Welterweight Champion. Taylor had his first fight at 147 pounds in his last fight, losing to Ekow Essuman in a massive upset. Taylor will be looking to secure the big fights at this late stage of his career, while another win for Catterall secures him the edge in this rivalry, being the perfect thing to prepare him for a welterweight title push.
Another alternative is against Rolando Romero. Romero is the current WBA Regular Junior Welterweight Champion. He defeated Ryan Garcia in his last fight to secure himself his biggest win. While Garcia has mentioned the rematch, Romero’s next fight is unclear. Romero is expected to become the full champion, with the news that Jaron Ennis will move up to 154 pounds. That would then give Catterall the chance to secure a belt.
There is also the chance to secure a mega domestic fight with Conor Benn. Benn will rematch Chris Eubank Jr. in September after suffering his first career loss in their first fight. Benn is expected to move back down to 147, giving Catterall the chance to make this fight. Benn is ranked number five in the WBA rankings, as well as number three in the WBC at welterweight. Benn is also with Matchroom, making it a much easier fight to make. Regardless, Eddie Hearn has said he wants the biggest fights for Catterall.
“Jack is going to be looking for a big fight at 147 now. He’s going to be ranked in the top 10 in both governing bodies [IBF and WBA at welterweight]. The division is red hot right now. You’ve got some tremendous fighters. Obviously, with Boots moving up and likely to vacate, Paddy Donovan against Lewis Crocker comes for that [IBF] world championship spot. The winner of that fight is going to be looking for big fights. Big fights domestically and big fights, Ireland against England, and internationally,” Hearn said
