Joshua Buatsi secured a contentious majority decision win over Zach Parker, as we look at his next steps.
The win was the perfect response after he had suffered his first loss, which came against Callum Smith in the fight before. Buatsi’s win was also vital since it was his first fight under Queensbury Promotions. He has managed to improve his standings, as he now seeks the biggest fights. Here are some options he could take.
A rematch could take place against Callum Smith. Their first encounter was a tough, competitive battle that Buatsi ultimately lost via a decision. Smith is a former world champion, who has been in the ring with the likes of Artur Beterbiev and Canelo Alvarez. While he lost those two bouts, Smith is on a two-fight win streak. Smith has also not boxed since the Buatsi win, meaning he is available. Smith is also the WBO Interim Light Heavyweight Champion, meaning Buatsi has something to chase.
The biggest domestic fight possible at light-heavyweight is against Anthony Yarde. Both Buatsi and Yarde have knockout power. Buatsi has 13 KOs from his 20 wins, while Yarde has 24 KOs from his 27 wins. Yarde faces WBC Light Heavyweight Champion David Benavidez next. A win for Yarde makes a Buatsi fight less likely if a rematch with Benavidez took place. However, a loss sets up a mega domestic clash, allowing Yarde to take another big fight.
There is an outside chance of pursuing a fight with Ben Whittaker. The latter is undefeated with a 9-0-1. He makes his Matchroom Boxing debut against Benjamin Gavazi on 29 November after leaving BOXXER. While a Whittaker fight is lucrative, it is arguably too early and risky for him to take it. However, it has the ability to sell out arenas in the UK. That would require Frank Warren and Eddie Hearn to work together to make the fight, but for now, it may be too early.
Equally, Buatsi could run things back with Parker. This is a risky move, as a loss would prove Parker’s claims that he won their fight. However, by not taking the fight, Buatsi opens himself up to the criticism that he was ducking his man. Buatsi has just joined Queensbury Promotions, meaning it is vital that he carries on this momentum, leaving him with plenty to ponder.
