What’s Next For Keith Thurman?
Joe Camporeale-Imagn Images

Keith Thurman defeated Brock Jarvis in his first fight since 2022, raising question marks over his next steps.

Thurman followed up on another win, taking his record to 30-1. He only had one loss, which came against Manny Pacquiao in 2019. Thurman was meant to box Tim Tsyzu last year. However, he had to pull out of the fight after suffering from a bicep injury. Those injuries have curtailed his career into having just two fights since 2019. Before the Jarvis fight, there was talk over Thurman facing Tszyu. The latter has lost his last two fights, meaning he is not in the best form.

A defeat to Sebastian Fundora meant he was no longer the WBO Junior Middleweight Champion. He followed that up with a stoppage defeat against the IBF Junior Middleweight Champion Bakhram Murtazaliev. Tszyu is looking to have a strong 2025, meaning that there is a narrative in place to make the Thurman fight. The winner would ultimately take a big step into putting their name into the conversation for the biggest bouts.

Options

The other alternative is to fight against Errol Spence. Jr. Thurman recently revealed that he had signed a contract to fight Spence before the latter took his bout with Terence Crawford. Spence was knocked out as Crawford became the first Undisputed Welterweight Champion of the four-belt era. Since then, Spence has undergone cataract surgery on his right eye. He has been linked with a fight against Fundora.

However, so far, there has not been an official announcement. A Spence fight offers both fighters the opportunity to secure one big payday before they leave the sport. They were both former unified welterweight champions and have nothing else to prove. It is also a fight that could easily be made since they both have close ties with PBC.

Thurman Reacts

Equally, Thurman could explore other options at 154. He could face other contenders in the division, such as Jermell Charlo. Charlo has not boxed since losing to Canelo Alvarez when he moved up two weight classes to take the fight at super middleweight.

Charlo is also no longer a world champion, meaning there are fewer obstacles to make this bout. But the question is whether Thurman wants to face Charlo and work his way up or whether he wants to go for the biggest name in the form of Spence. Thurman mentioned those names, including Ryan Garcia.

“I’m ready for the [Jermell] Charlos. I’m ready to get in the ring with Errol Spence if he’s looking for a fight. Fundora obviously. I might have to get back in the ranks before I can officially mandate a fight of that caliber. There are a lot of options. I’m willing to look at them all when they get brought to the table. “I got to see what comes onto the table.

“I think with the height that I just accomplished, a lot of people will be looking forward to getting that Keith Thurman fight. There’s a lot of young names. There are 147-pounders that are thinking about moving up. If Keith Thurman could ever get in the ring with Ryan Garcia, you know I’m signing that. If Ryan thinks he’s a big, bad boy and is thinking about moving up and keep fighting big names,” Thurman said

Micah Parsons says Cowboys gave him an ultimatum before trade

Micah Parsons claims he was willing to return to the negotiating table with the Dallas Cowboys before he was traded to the Green Bay Packers in a deal that sent shockwaves across the NFL, but the team declined. Parsons was traded to the Packers on Thursday in exchange for two first-round draft picks and three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Kenny Clark. The deal came less than a month after Parsons publicly requested a trade, but the star pass-rusher says he was open to remaining in Dallas right up until he was moved. Parsons told Jane Slater of NFL Network on Thursday evening that he went back to the Cowboys in an attempt to discuss a new contract after the trade chatter began heating up this week. The 26-year-old says Jerry Jones and company told him he can either play under the fifth-year option on his rookie contract (which would have paid Parsons just over $24M) or be shown the door. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media confirmed that the Cowboys "had a chance to stop the deal." Jones insists that he and Parsons had a handshake agreement for a new long-term extension earlier in the offseason. The Cowboys owner said he and Parsons worked out all of the details, including length, average annual salary and guaranteed money. Jones claims he presented the terms to Parsons' agent David Mulugheta, and Mulugheta had a vulgar response. Mulugheta insists that is not the truth. The relationship between Parsons and the Cowboys deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks, but it sounds like Parsons was still willing to work to find middle ground. It would not be a surprise if Jones tells a much different story.

Post-Ashton Jeanty era gets off to brutal start for No. 25 Boise State

There had to be at least some expectation that the Boise State Broncos were going to take a small step backwards in 2025. They probably just did not expect it to happen so soon in the season, and so emphatically. The No. 25 ranked Broncos were absolutely humiliated on Thursday night, losing 34-7 to an unranked South Florida team that was just 7-6 a year ago. It was a rude awakening for what might be ahead for Boise State following the departure of Heisman Trophy runner-up Ashton Jeanty. Jeanty's historic season helped carry the Broncos to an 12-1 regular season, with the only regular season loss being a three-point defeat to Oregon early in the season. They ended up in the College Football Playoff where they lost their first game to Penn State. But with Jeanty on to the NFL (a first-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders) there was always going to be a huge hole for them to replace. Not only in terms of production and skill, but also in their identity. They had none of that power-running identity on Thursday. Not only did they allow 34 consecutive points to South Florida, but the Broncos also managed to rush for only 122 yards on 38 carries, coming out to just 3.2 yards per attempt. They averaged 6.1 yards per carry in 2024, tied for the second-highest mark in college football. On one hand, losing an early season game isn't the end of the world, especially in the era of expanded playoffs. Boise State could still run the table the rest of the way with a very manageable schedule and play its way back into playoff contention. It's also not uncommon for teams to struggle early in the season. There is no preseason in college football and everybody is just coming in cold right into real games. Sometimes teams take a while to get moving. But this is not a particularly good South Florida team, and for Boise State to come out so flat and be so uncompetitive in the opener is a bad sign for what might be ahead.

Green Bay Packers: Micah Parsons Responds to NFC East QB’s Unexpected Pitch After Trade

Perhaps one of the winners of the Green Bay Packers’ trade acquisition of Micah Parsons on Thursday is Russell Wilson and the New York Giants. With Parsons gone in the NFC East division, the Giants don’t have to deal with Parsons twice in the 2025 NFL regular season. Well, they will still be facing the Packers in East Rutherford in Week 11, but at least they’re not going to deal with Parsons multiple games in a season for years to come. Russell Wilson gets response from Parsons after Green Bay Packers trade Following Parsons’ stunning trade from the Dallas Cowboys to Green Bay, Wilson went on social media to offer the former Penn State Nittany Lions star some logistical help. “You know @MicahhParsons11 I went to Wisconsin @BadgerFootball…Anything you need in Wisco… Packing ur bags.. moving company… just let me know. ,” Wilson shared in a post on X. Parsons saw Wilson’s post and responded to it. “ hit my line,” Parsons wrote. It is undeniable that the Cowboys lost a crucial defensive weapon by letting go of Parsons, but they also didn’t see him as important enough to get him the extension contract he was looking for. Instead, Parsons lands in Green Bay, where he will be helping the Packers’ stop unit that was just 12th in the NFL in 2024 with a 7.42 percent sack rate. In any case, Parsons is no longer as big of a yearly threat to the rest of the NFC East but is now for the Packers’ NFC North rivals. The Chicago Bears, Minnesota Vikings and Detroit Lions just had their respective offensive lines and quarterbacks put on notice by Parsons.

Dallas Cowboys and Jerry Jones try to salvage the Micah Parsons debacle and fallout in latest 7-round 2026 NFL mock draft

It is never boring in the Dallas Cowboys fandom, especially after trading away All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons on Thursday to the Green Bay Packers for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and two future first round picks. After you make some Jerry Jones jokes, and the dust settles a bit, it is important for the Cowboys to begin figuring out the next steps on the edge defensively. The potential answer most will consider is with their new draft capital, finding the next young defensive ends via the 2026 NFL Draft. With the new need considered, here is a 7-round mock draft for the Cowboys to try and recover. It’s an imperfect practice, but it’s the position that Dallas has put themselves in with that blockbuster deal. Round 1, Pick 15: Jeremiyah Love, RB, Notre Dame Wait, shouldn’t this selection be the spot to find the replacement for Micah Parsons? While that is the biggest need now, the board just didn’t fall that way. The Cowboys decide, instead, to opt for the best player available at a major position of need. Love immediately upgrades the running back room for Dallas, and becomes the focal point of the offense. Whether it be as a runner or pass receiver, the 6-0, 214-pound athlete is a threat to score every time he touches the football. That should take some of the pressure off quarterback Dak Prescott. Round 1, Pick 23 (via Green Bay): David Bailey, EDGE, Texas Tech With the selection the Cowboys received from the Packers, they try to find some pass rushing help to soften the blow of losing Parsons. It is more than likely a loss that will need attention in the draft and free agency, but Bailey certainly brings some developmental upside to fill the role. He is a lighter standup rusher at 6-3 and 250 pounds, but possesses really nice length, explosiveness, and bend. Developing a solid pass rush plan will be very important for Bailey to reach his upside. Round 2, Pick 47: Max Klare, TE, Ohio State Ferguson is a rock solid player, but there is still ability for the Cowboys to add to that tight end room to become a more versatile unit. The great thing about Klare is that he can play all over the field, including as a big slot at times. Along with Ferguson, as well as CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens at wide receiver, Prescott should have a ton of pass game weapons for the foreseeable future. Round 4, Pick 115: Kenyatta Jackson Jr., EDGE, Ohio State You aren’t going to replace the impact of Parsons with one player, so double dipping on the edge is a good idea. If Jackson has the breakout season that some are anticipating, there’s a good chance he goes quite a bit higher than this. Until he does breakout, however, this is a bit of a bet on traits. The 21-year old is an imposing player at 6-6 and 265 pounds. His combination of size, length, and explosiveness brings a lot of upside to the table. Round 5, Pick 157: Collin Wright, CB, Stanford Wright is one of the few legitimate NFL prospects left on this poor Stanford team. While he isn’t the most physically gifted cover man of all time, Wright is very experienced and smart. He could thrive in a zone based system with some developmental upside. If nothing else, he should become a rock solid depth piece due to his consistency. Round 6, Pick 180: Rod Moore, S, Michigan Prior to the 2024 season, Moore was being projected as a potential top-100 selection for the 2025 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for Moore, he missed last season due to injury, but he is back healthy. He is a gifted athlete that moves very well on the back end. Moore is a bit of a smaller safety at 184 pounds, so the nickel may end up being his best slot long term due to movement skills and willingness as a tackler. That versatility is a nice thing for a team to bet on. Round 6, Pick 218: Nic Anderson, WR, LSU If health wasn’t a concern for Anderson, he probably goes much earlier. He is a bigger bodied pass catcher with tremendous ball skills, and underrated upside as a route runner. Whether Anderson makes it in the league is really going to come down to availability for the former Oklahoma transfer. Round 7, Pick 242: Avery Johnson, QB, Kansas State If Johnson is projected to go this late, he more than likely returns for his senior season at Kansas State, but he was on the board. Dak Prescott is still a good quarterback when healthy, but he is aging quickly and has struggled at times with durability. Joe Milton is in the room as a backup as well, but he isn’t very good. Johnson is a dart throw at a talented athlete with some developmental upside.
