What’s Next For Sebastian Fundora?
Andy Abeyta/The Desert Sun / USA TODAY NETWORK

WBC junior middleweight champion Sebastian Fundora has his sights set on unifying the division following his dominant win over Tim Tszyu.

Fundora made Tszyu quit on the stool after the seventh round, giving Fundora his second win over him as he retained his WBC belt. Fundora has said he is open to boxing the victor between Xander Zayas vs. Jorge Garcia Perez or taking on IBF champion Bakhram Murtazaliev in a unification clash. A unification fight is possible, given that Murtazaliev has not fought since his KO win over Tszyu.

Fundora also mentioned former unified welterweight champion Errol Spence Jr. as a potential future opponent. The pair were repeatedly linked with a fight after suggestions that Spence was about to move up to 154. They even met in the ring after Fundora beat Tszyu for the first time. Spence last entered into the ring when Terence Crawford gave him his first loss, as Spence missed out on becoming undisputed at 147. But since Spence did not announce his retirement, that fight can still be made.

Fundora Reacts

The other alternative is to face the WBC interim champion, Vergil Ortiz. Ortiz (23-0, 21 KOs) remains unbeaten, but recent performances have raised questions. While he scored back-to-back wins over Serhii Bohachuk and Israil Madrimov, his bout with Bohachuk was far from dominant. Ortiz had to get off the canvas to secure the win, and some felt he may have lost that fight on the scorecards. Either way, Fundora had plenty of options.

“Yes, I do want to fight one more time this year. If I could fight two more times this year, why not. Whoever. We have this fight [Xander Zayas vs. Jorge Garcia Perez] next week [July 26] for the WBO. I want to see that fight. I want to see the outcome of that fight. Maybe we will capture that title again. Yeah, definitely. He [Bakhram Murtazaliev] has the IBF. That’s a nice-looking title. I like that red title,” Fundora said
