Vergil Ortiz Jr. secured a second-round knockout against Erickson Lubin, as we look at what could be next for him.

The win meant he retained his WBC Interim Junior Middleweight Title, extending Ortiz’s undefeated record to 24-0. He is now in a position to face the full WBC Junior Middleweight Champion Sebastian Fundora. Naturally, the attention turns towards who he could face next.

The immediate next step for Vergil Ortiz Jr. is arguably against Jaron Ennis. Ennis was ringside alongside his promoter Eddie Hearn, as he faced off against Ortiz in the ring. The two fighters have expressed their desire to face each other next, with one fighter knowing their undefeated record is at risk of going. The two fighters are also knockout artist. Ennis has 31 knockouts from his 35 wins, while Ortiz has 22 knockouts from his 24 victories.

“This can be a great negotiation. When I say it has to be favourable to Vergil, that’s the obvious case. Look at what he did and look at what he is. Vergil is the man. Having this fight in Las Vegas can be huge, but Ortiz has to be the favourite here when it comes to negotiations. As long as they’re favourable we’ll make the fight happen.

“He better not. There’s no question that I have the man. There’s no question that Vergil is the man. These negotiations will be negotiations just like any other fight. It will go back and forth but at the end of the day Vergil is the man,” Oscar De La Hoya (Ortiz’s promoter)

Elsewhere, Ortiz’s status as the WBC Interim Champion positions him directly for potential unification bouts. The WBO and WBA titles are reportedly heading toward a unification contest between Xander Zayas and Abass Baraou in early 2026. Ortiz could logically target the winner of that clash by mid-2026 to vie for a unified title.

Furthermore, there are potentially bigger fights against such as Errol Spence Jr. Spence has not been in the ring since getting knocked out by Terence Crawford in 2023, as he missed out on becoming undisputed at 147. However, he was ringside for the Ortiz fight, as the attention turns towards when he will make a return to the ring since he has not announced his retirement.
