When Manny Pacquiao briefly returned to teach an MMA fighter a boxing lesson

In December 2022, Manny Pacquiao started his journey back to the ring.

The Filipino legend announced his retirement from boxing in 2021 after falling short in his bid to reclaim the WBA (Super) welterweight title, losing a unanimous decision to Yordenis Ugas. That result seemed to close the book on an incredible career that included world titles across eight weight divisions.

But over four years later, Pacquiao is once again eyeing a world title. His return fight against Mario Barrios ended in a draw, narrowly missing out on the WBC welterweight belt.

Plenty of fans were surprised by how sharp he looked, considering he had not fought professionally since 2021. But during that break from boxing, ‘PacMan’ did not completely step away from competition.

Exhibition boxing matches have become a growing trend in recent years, with Pacquiao’s old rival Floyd Mayweather taking part in several since retiring. Since 2018, ‘Money’ has fought eight exhibitions against influencers and martial artists.

The Filipino icon entered the scene for the first time on December 10, 2022, taking on South Korean martial artist DK Yoo in a six-round bout at the Korea International Exhibition Center in Goyang.

The only eight-division world champion in boxing history was levels above his opponent. He knocked Yoo down several times and cruised to a unanimous decision win that surprised no one.

The gap between the two fighters was obvious from the start, with Pacquiao controlling every round while Yoo struggled to keep up.

Although Pacquiao kept quiet about his future plans after that bout, he returned for another exhibition under the Rizin banner against Rukiya Anpo. It was not until after that fight that he decided to return to professional boxing over two years later.

Manny Pacquiao stepped back into the ring for charity, not personal gain

Pacquiao’s exhibition against Yoo was not about money or preparing for a comeback. Instead, it was a charity event that raised significant funds for several causes.

The fight generated support for families affected by the war in Ukraine and also contributed to Pacquiao’s ongoing housing initiatives in the Philippines.

The proceeds helped finance the construction of 80 homes through his foundation, continuing his long-standing efforts to provide shelter for those in need.
