Will Canelo Alvarez Topple Floyd Mayweather to Become The Richest Boxer?
EFE

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez (63-2-2, 39 KOs) might just become the next boxing billionaire.

When there is a conversation about big bills in the boxing world, the first name that comes to mind is that of boxing’s very own Godfather of Bling, Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs). While Mayweather was last seen in an exhibition showdown in 2024, the 34-year-old Alvarez was last seen dishing out an impressive victory against William Scull on May 3, retaining his belts and winning the IBF super middleweight title. And now with a new deal, he might just topple Mayweather’s position as the richest boxer.

The Guadalajaran superstar recently signed a four-fight contract with Riyadh Season and its supremo, Turki Alalshikh. It is said that he will earn nearly $400 million from the deal.

Mayweather, on the other hand, is no stranger to gargantuan paychecks, taking three spots in the top 6 biggest payouts in boxing history. According to reports, he earned roughly $250 million and $275 million fighting Manny Pacquiao and Conor McGregor, respectively. In fact, he even netted over $80 million fighting Alvarez in 2013.

However, with the deal, Alvarez made $80 million fighting Scull and is projected to earn $150 million fighting Terence Crawford in September. This, combined with his personal entrepreneurial endeavours and no sign of retiring anytime soon, means that it is only a matter of time before he enters the billionaire club.

“Don’t Mess With The Lion”

Alalshikh undoubtedly has big plans for Alvarez. While the Scull fight had divided opinions, Alalshikh’s words from February hint that this might just be a minor pop ahead of the explosion yet to come.

“Canelo, in Riyadh in May. The biggest fight in the history of boxing in September. Then two more fights in 2026,”Alalshikh said after signing with Alvarez.

“Don’t mess with the lion.” With the Crawford showdown in September and the potentially fiery fights in 2026, there is no denying that boxing aficionados are in for a new Canelo arc.
