Junior middleweight contender Xander Zayas (20-0, 12 KOs) scored a dominant, unanimous decision over Damien Sosa (25-3, 12 KOs) as all three judges had Zayas winning every round.
It was an interesting opening round as Sosa began the fight boxing behind the left jab. Zayas kept his left jab in Sosa’s face throughout the round. Zayas controlled the second round with his left jab and followed it with his left hook to Sosa’s body. Throughout the round, Sosa used a ton of movement but didn’t throw many punches.
In the third round, Sosa’s movement slowed down, which allowed Zayas to increase his combinations with a left hook to the body and head of Sosa landing cleanly. Zayas picked up the pace as he began to get comfortable in the fight. Zayas kept the pressure on Sosa throughout the fourth round and continued finding a home for his left hook. Sosa landed some good, clean counter shots, but it could not stop Zayas’ come-forward offense.
The fifth round was more of the same from Zayas, who doubled up on the left hook which was set up from the left jab. Sosa landed a clean, straight right hand that buzzed Zayas, but not enough to get him in trouble. Zayas kept breaking down Sosa’s body, hoping to land something big on the head later in the fight. Sosa kept moving forward and landing a few of his punches, but Zayas was just in a great rhythm.
The seventh round was more of the same, and in the eighth, in the last 30 seconds, Sosa landed a four-punch combination that buzzed Zayas temporarily. Rounds nine and ten were all Zayas as he cruised to a unanimous decision victory. When asked who he wanted to fight next, Zayas said, “Anyone in the top five.”
