Zuffa Boxing has officially announced its most significant signing to date. Ring and IBF cruiserweight champion Jai Opetaia has joined the new promotion, a major acquisition that immediately signals Zuffa Boxing’s intent to become a serious power player in the global boxing landscape. The announcement was made Friday.
“Pumped for the future,” Opetaia said in a Zuffa Boxing video posted on X. “Exciting times. Let’s get these big fights over the line. Unification and undisputed soon. Let’s go.”

Opetaia (29-0, 23 KOs) has rapidly established himself as one of the elite forces in the cruiserweight division.
The dynamic southpaw from Sydney, Australia, captured the then-vacant IBF title in May 2024 with a unanimous decision victory over longtime world champion Mairis Briedis. That win elevated Opetaia from contender to division centerpiece.
Since then, the 30-year-old has successfully defended the IBF title five times across two championship reigns, including a decisive rematch win over Briedis. His most recent outing came on Dec. 6, when he stopped previously unbeaten Huseyin Cinkara via eighth-round knockout.
Opetaia’s arrival represents a major milestone for Zuffa Boxing, which is positioning itself as a destination for elite-level talent rather than a developmental league. Zuffa Boxing was formed through a partnership between TKO Group Holdings and Sela, with a leadership group that blends combat sports and global entertainment influence. The executive team includes Dana White, Turki Alalshikh, Nick Khan, and Sela managing director and CEO Rakan AlHarthy.
With Opetaia now on board, Zuffa Boxing immediately boasts a legitimate world champion capable of headlining major events and pursuing full cruiserweight unification.
Zuffa Boxing’s inaugural event takes place January 23 at UFC Apex. The main event features junior middleweight contender Callum Walsh (15-0, 11 KOs) against Carlos Ocampo (38-3, 26 KOs) in a scheduled 10-round middleweight bout.
Also on the card:
Misael Rodriguez (15-0, 7 KOs) vs. Austin Deanda (17-0, 11 KOs) — 10-round middleweight bout
Julian Rodriguez (24-1, 15 KOs) vs. Cain Sandoval (17-0, 15 KOs) — 10-round welterweight bout
The event begins at 9 p.m. ET and will stream live on Paramount+.
Landing Jai Opetaia gives Zuffa Boxing instant legitimacy and a clear championship pathway. At just 30 years old, Opetaia is entering his prime with knockout power, elite pedigree, and unfinished business across the cruiserweight division.
If Zuffa Boxing’s stated goal is to deliver unification and undisputed-level fights, Opetaia is the perfect foundation. And with this signing, the message is clear: Zuffa Boxing isn’t easing into the sport it’s arriving at full force.
