The importance of consistency at the quarterback position at every level has never been more apparent. This season, the NFL will have seen at least 61 different starting quarterbacks through 17 weeks, bringing into question the future of development at the position and the depth of the talent pool available.

Evaluating the performances of the quarterbacks in the CFL in 2023, nine of the top ten passers had more touchdowns thrown than interceptions. Eight of the top ten quarterbacks also completed 67 percent or more of their passes.

Clearly the level of play at the quarterback position has continued to improve. As the CFL's star quarterbacks over 30 years old start to age out of the league, the door is wide open for the young talent to take over.

Here are some of the rising stars that could be future starting quarterbacks in the CFL.

Top CFL Quarterbacks 25 Years Old or Under

Breaking Down Top Young QBs

Tre Ford, Edmonton Elks (Age 25)

The ceiling for Tre Ford is as high as any quarterback in the CFL. Ford is electric with the football when running with it and smart when he throws it. He finished 2023 with 2,069 passing yards and 12 touchdowns to just six interceptions while adding 622 rushing yards and three scores. His mobility tends to get the most attention, but his accuracy and decision-making are what make his future bright in the league.

Dustin Crum, Ottawa Redblacks (Age 24)

Plagued by injuries at quarterback, Ottawa turned to rookie Dustin Crum to lead the offense. He proved his worth quickly, playing in all 18 games throwing for 3,109 yards with 10 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. Crum added 741 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on the ground as well. The Redblacks have a predicament at quarterback, as Nick Arbuckle was presumed to be their guy, but Crum showed off enough skill that he could be the long-term solution.

Taylor Powell, Hamilton Tiger-Cats (Age 25)

The Hamilton Tiger-Cats faced a revolving door at the quarterback position in 2023, but it may have ended in finding something special in Taylor Powell. He racked up 2,283 passing yards with 10 touchdowns to nine interceptions while also contributing 196 rushing yards and one touchdown run. Development is still needed for the young signal caller, but with Bo Levi Mitchell’s future in question, Powell could be leading this franchise soon enough.

Cameron Dukes, Toronto Argonauts (Age 25)

Everyone knows that Chad Kelly is the man running the show for Toronto and may have that position for a while. What fans are slowing finding out is Cameron Dukes makes for a solid backup for the team. In his first season, Dukes threw for 760 yards and ran for 126 more scoring 10 total touchdowns. It may not be now, but if Dukes can get more experience on the field, he could have a future in the league.
