Russell Westbrook enjoyed a strong season with the Denver Nuggets. After multiple tough years with both the Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers, he re-established himself as part of Denver's second unit.
However, despite holding a player option for next season, Westbrook has chosen to hit the free-agent market. As such, he is now free to negotiate a contract with any team in the NBA. Fortunately for Westbrook, there's a handful of teams in desperate need of a new point guard.
Here are three potential landing spots for the former MVP.
3. Denver Nuggets
There's still a chance Westbrook could re-sign with the Nuggets. He could sign a two-year deal with a player option for the second year. Considering his impact off the bench, Denver would likely be amenable to bringing Westbrook back for another season or two.
However, the Nuggets could just as easily look elsewhere. After all, head coach David Adelman will want fresh faces that fit the scheme he wants to implement. Therefore, Westbrook may be surplus to requirements moving forward.
2. Orlando Magic
The Magic are in dire need of a point guard. Westbrook could provide a stop-gap solution for the franchise, while still being talented enough to help improve the team's current fortunes. Pairing Westbrook with Jalen Suggs would also unleash the All-Star's "rip-and-run" style of play, which could bring the best out of the veteran ball-handler.
Orlando will likely seek a longer-term solution before turning its attention to Westbrook. However, if the Magic feel like they need a veteran punch, there aren't many better options on the free agency market.
1. Miami Heat
Similarly to the Magic, the Miami Heat are in dire need of a point guard. Terry Rozier is the latest ball-handler to fall short of replacing Goran Dragic. Furthermore, assuming Miami doesn't acquire Kevin Durant this summer, the Heat has a direct pathway to significant cap space next summer.
Therefore, a short-term partnership with Westbrook is a logical choice. Pat Riley isn't adverse to trusting aging stars, and the former Oklahoma City Thunder needs a new home. The pairing could make perfect sense for the next year or two. Furthermore, head coach Erik Spoelstra would be the perfect head coach to try and squeeze the last bit of magic out of the 2017 MVP winner.
