Tennessee Vols LHP Zander Sechrist delivered in the biggest game of his career. And then he sent a message to UT athletic director Danny White that every Tennessee fan can get behind.
Sechrist pitched 5.1 innings while allowing just one run in Tennessee's 6-5 win against the Texas A&M Aggies in the deciding game of the 2024 College World Series on Monday night.
While speaking with reporters after the game, Sechrist spoke about the impact that Tennessee head coach Tony Vitello's had on him. And he also not-so-subtly suggested that Vitello should received a lifetime contract with the Vols.
"The man's like a father figure, to be honest," said Sechrist when asked about Vitello. "I was blessed enough to have him recruit me. Growing up in a single mother household and talking to this man mostly every day and every week, he was just like a father figure to me. I went on my recruiting visits and I bought a hat here in the alumni Vol shop. I go back home and I realize that out of all the recruiting visits, the only thing I bought was a Tennessee hat. It just felt like home. I'm glad that we finally got it done. I couldn't be happier for this program and the way it's been built. I see Danny White back there, so I'm going to put it out there -- I hope there's a lifetime contract coming soon for Coach Vitello."

Vitello was deserving of a lucrative contract extension before the result of Monday night's game against Texas A&M.
But now that Vitello has a national championship on his résumé, it's more than fair to suggest that Tennessee should give him that lifetime contract that Sechrist mentioned.
Vitello has built a monster on Rocky Top in an incredibly short amount of time. There isn't a coach that's a better fit for Tennessee and its passionate fan base than Vitello. I can't imagine anyone else coaching the Vols as long as Vitello is in the baseball business.
