3. NIL Structure Remains Intact

Self departing from the university would have created serious uncertainty among the program's biggest NIL donors. Many of the people responsible for paying players behind the scenes would have been directly affected by his retirement.

Although KU has not performed up to its usual standard lately, Self is still the greatest coach to ever roam the sidelines for Kansas. These contributors must feel much better about investing in the next Jayhawk team with him back at the helm.

This is especially important for the Jayhawks with the transfer portal rapidly approaching. It provides the reassurance donors needed to ramp up their investment and commit to more aggressive funding for the program.

2. Retaining Key Assistant Coaches

A departure from Self could have shaken up the coaching staff in a significant way. Not only would a new head coach bring in his own assistants, but current members of the KU staff may have left for more stable opportunities.

One example is associate head coach Jeremy Case, one of Self's top up-and-coming assistants. He interviewed for the Arizona State head coaching gig last month and would have certainly continued to explore opportunities this offseason.

Even if one or two assistants decide to leave, the coaching staff should look relatively similar to what we saw this past season. This includes retaining former Jayhawk and NBA head coach Jacque Vaughn, who many view as a potential successor to Self.

Perhaps no bigger domino effect from Self's return could come than the recruitment of Tyran Stokes, the top-rated prospect in the class of 2026. The basketball world is waiting on his college decision, and receiving clarity on Self's status undoubtedly strengthened KU's position.

Schools like Kentucky, Oregon, and Arkansas remain in the running for the star forward, but Kansas has been viewed as the leader since January. He is close friends with KU pledge Taylen Kinney and has strong ties to the university, even as a Nike athlete considering an Adidas school.

Stokes' reaction to Self's announcement on X all but confirmed where his mind stands right now. He could very well commit to the Jayhawks in the coming days now that he has clarity on who could be coaching him at the next level.
