Georgia Tech has a strong finish to the season, but that never means anything for the offseason. While the Yellow Jackets were the only team to beat Clemson and Louisville in ACC play, star point guard Naithan George has entered the transfer portal. The move is a shocking one with the momentum that Georgia Tech had under Damon Stoudamire. So what’s next for the young point guard? What kind of options will he have going forward? Will he be a top commodity in the transfer portal?

An Elite Playmaker

George was a highly touted prospect, but he marks another top point guard to leave the ACC in 2025. George was the ACC assist leader in 2024-25, averaging 6.5 assists per game. He made the right play virtually every time he touched the ball, as well, averaging only three turnovers per game. While some guards may play with fewer turnovers, they normally don’t average 6.5 assists per game. George is more than just a passer, averaging 12.3 points per game as well. George will be an offensive star for whatever team he transfers to.

He also plays with grit when he is on the floor. George averaged over one steal per game and added 4.2 rebounds per game at only 6-foot-3. Whether he is hustling to the floor or jumping the passing lanes, he is always making team-oriented plays. On the offensive end, he assists better than any guard in the ACC, and on defense, he does whatever he can to get the ball back. He is also only a sophomore, so he will have multiple years of eligibility remaining.

Who Will Want George?

He may not get the same attention as New Mexico Star Donovan Dent, but he will join Elliot Cadeau as two of the younger point guards with quality experience. Dent will likely set the market. Teams like North Carolina, Duke, UConn, Kentucky, and more will all be reaching out and waiting for Dent to answer. However, most of those teams will walk away empty-handed. That’s where George steps in. He fits into any offense. It seems odd to think that North Carolina may switch from Cadeau to George, but the possibility remains. Ben McCollum at Iowa and Ryan Odom at Virginia will likely be reaching out to the young guard to be the potential starting point guard on an NCAA Tournament team.

The Last Word on Naithan George’s Transfer

He may not be on the same level as Bennet Stirtz or Donovan Dent in terms of experience and scoring, but he can provide any NCAA Tournament team with a strong point guard. When defenses crackdown during the tournament, a good guard can open up the defense. George can provide the scoring or playmaking that allows offenses to hum against elite defenses. He was never the problem with Georgia Tech’s team. Ultimately, Naithan George has the potential to be the transfer that lifts a team to the next level, whether he gets the same attention as Dent or not.
