The Arizona State Sun Devils are expected to retain Bobby Hurley for at least one more season, according to multiple reports.
Hurley has one year left on his contract, which will take him into his 11th season with the program in a tenure that has included three trips to the NCAA Tournament, but only one in the past six seasons.
The Sun Devils lost to Kansas State in the first round of the Big 12 Tournament on Tuesday, 71-66, to finish the season 13-19 overall and 4-17 in the Big 12.
"It's something that will weigh on me, I'll have a lot of regret," Hurley said following Tuesday's loss. "If we had the whole puzzle together, this was an NCAA tournament team. And that's just not what it is right now at the moment."
The Sun Devils came into the 2024-25 season with high expectations after landing one of the best recruiting classes in school history, headlined by five-star big man Jayden Quaintance and freshman guard Joson Sanon.
Non conference wins over Saint Mary's, New Mexico, Santa Clara, and Grand Canyon laid the foundation for a potentially solid season in the Big 12 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, but injuries ravaged the Sun Devils in conference play, leading to a dismal 4-16 record including losing 11 of their final 12 games.
At times the Sun Devils had just six scholarship players available, with multiple injuries and the dismissal of leading scorer BJ Freeman late in the year due to conduct detrimental to the team.
Hurley will get a chance to finish out his contract and one more year to try to turn this program into a contender in the crowded Big 12 conference. If Quaintance and Sanon both return the team will have plenty of talent, but will need to find some veteran experience in the transfer portal to supplement the young stars on the roster.
