Magic Johnson earns his 18th championship ring

Earvin “Magic” Johnson’s legendary status as a champion reached an unprecedented level Saturday morning after the Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Toronto Blue Jays in a thrilling Game 7 to capture the 2025 World Series.

As a co-owner of the Dodgers, the victory provides Johnson with his 18th championship ring across his career as a player, executive and owner of multiple sports franchises.

Johnson, 66, has seamlessly transitioned from a Hall of Fame career on the court to becoming one of the most successful sports owners and entrepreneurs in history. His ability to build and lead winning organizations is unparalleled, with his influence now extending across basketball, baseball, soccer and women's basketball.

The Dodgers’ hard-fought 5-4 extra-inning victory over the Blue Jays in Toronto secures the franchise’s second consecutive title and its third since Johnson joined the ownership group in 2012, further solidifying his reputation for bringing a "winning touch" to every venture.

Breaking down the 18 rings

Johnson’s record of 18 championships is a blend of on-court brilliance and front-office acumen, covering multiple levels of competition.

On the court (six titles)

Johnson began his championship legacy as a college standout before dominating the NBA. This includes the NCAA Championship in 1979 with Michigan State, and five NBA Championships as a player with the Los Angeles Lakers in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1987 and 1988.

In the front office and ownership (12 titles)

Since his playing days, Johnson’s executive and ownership roles have delivered continued success, primarily focused on Los Angeles sports teams.

His NBA championships as a Lakers executive or owner total five, in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2010.

His ownership empire in other sports includes three World Series titles with the Dodgers (2020, 2024, 2025). As a part-owner of the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, he secured one WNBA championship in 2016. He added another title with the Los Angeles Football Club (LAFC) in Major League Soccer, winning the MLS Cup in 2022. Finally, his ownership stakes in esports organization Team Liquid have contributed two titles, including the 2019 "Counter-Strike: Global Offensive" Grand Slam Championship and The International "Dota 2" in 2024.

The enduring Midas touch

The latest Dodgers title, a hard-earned victory over the Blue Jays, provides Johnson with his third World Series ring since purchasing the franchise. When Johnson joined the Dodgers ownership group, the team had not won a World Series in over two decades. Their recent run of dominance underscores his impact on fostering a culture of high expectation and success.

As the billionaire entrepreneur recently expanded his reach to the NFL with a minority ownership stake in the Washington Commanders, the sports world is already speculating on when he might add a 19th ring from a completely new league. For now, Johnson stands alone as arguably the most successful cross-sport champion in modern history.
