Tom Ostrom has been officially added to West Virginia’s staff as an assistant coach, the program announced on Wednesday afternoon. Ostrom, who worked at Drake for the past two years, rejoins Darian DeVries at WVU.
“We’re excited to have Tom join our coaching staff,” DeVries said in a press release. “He’s a high-level coach and recruiter who brings a great deal of experience with him. Tom was with us the last two years at Drake and is very familiar with our system and program.”

Ostrom originally took a job with Mark Byington at Vanderbilt this offseason after Drake hired Ben McCollum.
Before Drake, Ostrom served as Indiana’s associate head coach from 2017-21. Ostrom was on the Bulldogs staff for two seasons. Ostrom has served as an assistant at Dayton under Archie Miller and has worked with Arkansas, Florida and South Alabama during his two-decade career.
Ostrom graduated from Minnesota in 1997 and worked as a student assistant.
Last Friday, West Virginia officially hired Cavel Witter as an assistant, another ex-Drake coach under DeVries. Witter served as assistant coach and chief of operations at Drake and was set to coach at USC Upstate next year. Before Drake, Witter was a graduate manager at Georgia Southern for two years.
In college, Witter played at Creighton for three seasons while DeVries was an assistant under Dana Altman. Witter averaged 8.0 points in 101 career games for the Bluejays. Witter played professional basketball in Portugal during the 2010s.
Ostrom joins a staff of DeVries (HC), Chester Frazier (AHC), Kory Barnett (assistant), Nick Norton (assistant), Witter (assistant) and Nelson Hernandez (director of player personnel/recruiting). Director of basketball operations Trent Michaels remains on staff from the previous regime.
