After losing one of their key playmakers in the transfer portal to Virginia, BYU has added a playmaker to fill in for the upcoming season. Baylor star freshman Robert Wright III has committed to play for BYU. The move opens the door for more impressive runs under Kevin Young at BYU in upcoming seasons. Wright brings strong experience to the Cougars and adds much-needed depth at point guard. BYU has lost a plethora of players to the NBA and transfer portal, so what does Wright bring to the table? Is he an upgrade at point guard? Can the Cougars compete for a Big 12 title next season? Let’s dive in.

Baylor Star Freshman Rob Wright Commits to BYU

Who is Wright?

Wright had a stellar season for Baylor, but he is likely known best for playing on the Montverde Academy team with Cooper Flagg and Derik Queen, projected first-round picks. He brought good play to the Baylor Bears as they advanced to the Round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament, losing to Duke. Wright may not be the most explosive scorer, but he still averaged 11.5 points per game on 41.4% shooting. At 6-foot-1, he still managed to shoot with relative efficiency in a great defensive conference. Wright also brings playmaking to BYU, averaging 4.2 assists per game. Like any young player, his shot-making decisions will only get better, so expect an increase in efficiency on the offensive juggernaut, BYU.

Is Rob Wright an Upgrade at Point Guard at BYU?

Wright is an upgrade over Dallin Hall, but Egor Demin will be a tough player to replace. Demin averaged 10.6 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.9 rebounds per game as the main focus of the offense. Whether he is considered a point guard or not, he was the true playmaker for the Cougars. Wright brings a small but more dynamic style at point guard for BYU. Wright undoubtedly chose to come here because of the success in developing talent by Young. One thing is certain: Wright has already proven himself in the Big 12. In this system, Wright can thrive. A true point guard could easily average top-10 assist numbers, so don’t be surprised if Wright averages north of seven assists per game next season.

Is BYU a Serious Threat to Win the Big 12?

BYU has elite size coming in next season from high school. In arguably the most surprising high school commitment of the season, BYU even grabbed number one overall recruit AJ Dybantsa from Utah Prep. Given the returning talent and the addition of Wright, BYU seems destined to repeat its massive success next season. Whether they will be able to compete with the dynamic Houston defense is another question. Texas Tech star JT Toppin chose to return, so the Red Raiders could be in trouble next season, too. However, Houston remains the biggest threat to any team winning the conference. In back-to-back seasons, the Cougars have made the transition from a mid-major to a power conference look easy. Without blowing a 12-point lead, the Cougars would have won a national championship.

While BYU could compete with them, they will need to fill their defensive woes. Remember their last game of the season? They let Alabama score 113 points. They will not win the Big 12 with such a porous defense. However, if these recruits can come in and provide a strong defensive presence for the Cougars, BYU’s offense is good enough to compete for a Big 12 and national title. For now, only time will tell whether they can make the necessary changes on the defensive end. Kevin Young’s work in the transfer portal is likely not done.
