AJ Dybantsa and the BYU Cougars finished the 2025-26 college basketball regular season with a 23-11 record and 9-9 in Big 12 play, securing the No. 6 seed in the West region of the 2026 NCAA Tournament. And on Thursday, Dybantsa made his tournament debut as BYU faced the No. 11 seed Texas Longhorns, who defeated NC State in the First Four.

Dybantsa has arguably been the best player in all of college basketball during his freshman year at BYU. The forward out of Brockton, Massachusetts, leads the nation with 25.3 points per game on 51.3% shooting, while averaging 6.7 rebounds and 3.8 assists. Dybantsa's performance this season earned him a first-team All-American nod, as well as the Big 12 Freshman of the Year award.

Going into BYU vs. Texas, Dybantsa had tallied 13 consecutive games with 20 or more points, one of the longest streaks in Big 12 history. With 54 seconds remaining in the first half, Dybantsa hit a driving layup to decrease the Cougars' deficit to 41-34, marking his 10th point of the game.

In doing so, Dybantsa has now tallied 20 or more points in 14 consecutive games, the second-longest streak in Big 12 history. His streak dates back all the way to February 4, when Dybantsa tallied 36 points on 13-of-20 shooting, seven rebounds and four assists in a 99-92 loss to the Oklahoma State Cowboys.

"AJ Dybantsa's 14-game 20-point streak is the second-longest in Big 12 history," BYU Game Notes wrote on X.

This wasn't the only historic achievement Dybantsa had against Texas. In fact, during the first half, Dybantsa moved up to second on the BYU single-season scoring list , surpassing Devin Durrant's 867 points from the 1983-84 season. Cougars legend Jimmer Fredette still holds the record with 1,068 points in 2010-11.

The winner of BYU and Texas will move on to the second round, where they will face the winner of No. 3 seed Gonzaga and No. 14 seed Kennesaw State.
