Cardinals Cruise to an 85-63 Victory Over Pepperdine

In a dominant display, Louisville men’s basketball team cruised to an 85-63 victory over Pepperdine at the KFC Yum! Center. The Cardinals showcased their skills by setting season highs in assists (17) and made 3-pointers (9), eventually securing their largest margin of victory since December 14, 2021.

Head coach Kenny Payne expressed his pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of playing with energy and togetherness. He highlighted the significance of conquering oneself and challenging any doubts or fears that the players may have. Despite some lapses in concentration when they had big leads, Payne acknowledged that it is part of the learning process for a young team.

Junior forward Brandon Huntley-Hatfield continued his impressive form with another double-double, recording 20 points and 12 rebounds. Redshirt sophomore guard/forward Mike James also had an impactful game, contributing 19 points and six boards. Freshman guard Curtis Williams had a career-high 16 points, hitting 4 of 5 from beyond the arc.

Louisville dominated the rebounding battle, outrebounding Pepperdine 43-27 and outscoring them 40-22 in the paint.

Huntley-Hatfield emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and avoiding mental mistakes, regardless of the fatigue. He stressed the need to support each other and maintain high energy levels to overcome any runs by the opposing team.

Louisville’s scoring runs were crucial in their victory, including stretches of 11-2, 7-0, and 8-0 in the first half. They carried a 39-25 lead into halftime and responded to Pepperdine’s attempts at a comeback with a 10-0 run, capped off by a 3-pointer from Williams. Their largest lead of the game came at 81-51 after a 3-point shot by junior guard Hercy Miller.

Sophomore guard Tre White also made an impact, reaching double figures with 10 points and six rebounds. Pepperdine’s Michael Ajayi led their team with 17 points and seven rebounds.

Looking ahead, Louisville will conclude the year with a highly anticipated rivalry matchup against No. 14/15 Kentucky at home. The game will be broadcasted on ESPN, promising an exciting clash between the two teams.
