College basketball freshmen to watch

Take a look at college basketball's 25 freshmen to watch during the 2016-17 season.

John Calipari has reloaded, adding one of the nation's top power forwards in Adebayo. The 6-9 big man chose the Wildcats over Kansas and Auburn, among others.

Shaka Smart showed that he could win with someone else's players in his first season with the Longhorns, but now he's getting his brand of athletes. The lanky Allen is from Austin and stayed home over going to Houston or Kansas.

Ike Anigbogu, C, UCLA

A native Californian, Anigbogu stayed close to home over going to Arizona or SMU. The center gives UCLA a much-needed threat in the paint.

Lonzo Ball, PG, UCLA

Ball was an early commit to UCLA and shows great NBA upside as a point guard at 6-5. He very well could be a one-and-done for the Bruins.

Marques Bolden, C, Duke

Bolden is overshadowed in Duke's elite recruiting class, but he certainly has big upside. The center is a load to guard at 6-10, 254 pounds, and could be off to the NBA after one year.

Miles Bridges, F, Michigan State

A native of Flint, Mich., Bridges should play immediately for the Spartans. He has the ability to put up big points for a team that is looking for new scorers early in the year.

Amir Coffey, SF, Minnesota

Coffey is the type of recruit Minnesota hoped head coach Richard Pitino would attract when it hired him. He chose the school over many top programs and will get plenty of minutes in his freshman season.

Jaylen Fisher, PG, TCU

Adding Fisher is a step in the right direction for a TCU program that has plenty of ground to cover. The 6-2 point guard could lead the Horned Frogs immediately.

De'Aaron Fox, PG, Kentucky

A consensus top 10 recruit at point guard, Fox could see limited playing time early in the year as he molds with the Wildcats.

Markelle Fultz, PG, Washington

Fultz was the type of recruit head coach Lorenzo Romar needed with his job probably on the line this year. The point guard has potential as a big-time scorer in his freshman season.

Frank Jackson, PG, Duke

It's no small feat when a freshman point guard shows the potential to lead Coach K's offense, but Jackson can make that claim. Like the rest of the Blue Devils, he has big scoring potential.

Josh Jackson, SG, Kansas

The Jayhawks are the heavy favorites to win the Big 12 again, and Jackson is part of the reason. The top recruit has great athleticism and size at 6-7 and could compete for the Wooden Award in his freshman season.

13 of 25

Andrew Jones, PG, Texas

Jones has the athleticism that Shaka Smart covets and the ability to be a major scorer for the Longhorns in his freshman season.

Wenyen Gabriel, PF, Kentucky

Power forwards in Gabriel's mold have excelled with John Calipari, and the Wildcats are optimistic about his potential as he gets stronger. Gabriel should make a big impact this season.

Harry Giles, PF, Duke

Considered by many to be the top recruit in the country, Giles stayed in his home state at Duke over Wake Forest and North Carolina. The 6-10 power forward is nearly impossible to stop in the paint and should add a much-needed dimension to the Duke offense.

16 of 25

Mustapha Heron, SF, Auburn

Heron is a huge addition for head coach Bruce Pearl. He has the polish to play immediately and make a huge impact offensively and defensively.

17 of 25

Jonathan Isaac, SF, Florida State

Isaac was in play for several smaller programs, ultimately choosing to remain in Florida. He has surprising mobility at 6-9 and will make a big freshman impact for the Seminoles.

18 of 25

Josh Langford, SG, Michigan State

Langford shows good size for a guard at 6-6 and has the scoring potential to be an immediate difference maker for the Spartans.

Leaf could make quite a pairing with fellow top recruit Lonzo Ball for the Bruins. The 6-9 big man could be one-and-done with a big season.

20 of 25

Malik Monk, SG, Kentucky

Yet another top get for John Calipari, Monk has the ability to run the Kentucky offense and also become a top scorer. He could head off to the NBA after one season.

Shamorie Ponds, PG, St. John's

Ponds found a place where he will get plenty of opportunity arriving to a team that won only eight games last season. He will help facilitate Chris Mullins' offense immediately.

Dennis Smith Jr., G, N.C. State

The Wolfpack is expected to take a step forward this season, due in large part of Smith's potential. Returning from a knee injury, Smith has huge scoring potential.

23 of 25

Jayson Tatum, SF, Duke

An elite recruit from St. Louis, Tatum is tough to stop while driving to the hoop and is also difficult to guard at 6-8. If all goes according to plan, he could be a top NBA pick next year.

24 of 25

Cassius Winston, PG, Michigan State

Winston is a Detroit native who has the ability to run the Michigan State offense. Coach Tom Izzo is set to give him significant playing time.

Omer Yurtseven, C, N.C. State

Yurtseven has to sit the first nine games of the season after playing for a pro club in Turkey over the last three seasons. The center has the potential to make a bang when he does arrive and is a great NBA prospect.
