For the first time since 2011 when Kemba Walker was still the king, the Connecticut Huskies ruled the Big East Tournament after beating the Marquette Golden Eagles in the tourney’s finals on Sunday, 73-57.
The win over the Golden Eagles did not just add to the resume of the reigning champions but also further cemented the Connecticut Huskies as the best team in the nation, at least in the eyes of many, including their head coach Dan Hurley.
After dismantling Marquette, Hurley reminded everyone who he thinks is the best program heading into Selection Sunday and the NCAA Tournament.
Via ESPN:
“We’ve been the best team in college basketball,” Hurley said. “Obviously, March Madness next week, who knows what goes on there, but we’ve clearly been the best program in the country this year.”
Don’t just take it from Hurley. Over at KenPom, the Connecticut Huskies are rated No. 1 in the nation and will also likely get the overall top seed in March Madness with both the Houston Cougars and the Purdue Boilermakers falling prey in the Big 12 title game and Big Ten tourney semifinals round, respectively.
Last year, UConn went into the March Madness as just a fourth seed but defied the odds to win all their assignments to be the last team standing.
