Unlike in the past few draft classes, there has been a clear consensus at the top of the 2025 NBA Draft for well over a year.
Duke freshman phenom and former five-star recruit Cooper Flagg has been labeled the next great American prospect, thanks to his dominant performance at every level.
He led Nokomis Regional High School in Maine to its first state title in school history as a freshman before transferring to perennial power Montverde Academy, where he won a national title. At Duke, Flagg was named the Naismith Men's Player of the Year and was also named ACC Player of the Year.
While his NBA fate was presumably determined by the NBA Draft Lottery, which saw the Dallas Mavericks get the top pick, Flagg still partook in testing at the NBA Scouting Combine in Chicago. In addition to testing, he also interviewed with teams, one of which was revealed to be the Boston Celtics, according to insider Kevin O'Conner.
“I have multiple sources telling me the Celtics also interviewed Cooper Flagg,” O'Connor said. “Now, this does not mean they are going to trade up into the Top 10, but I do think it's interesting at least the way it works at the draft combine. Teams can interview up to 13 players, and they rank the players that they most want to interview."
While this may seem out of nowhere, there are a couple of things worth noting when it comes to the Celtics and Flagg. For starters, they just lost six-time NBA All-Star Jayson Tatum to an Achilles injury amid their playoff run. There have also been rumors of the Celtics looking to blow their core group of players up this offseason.
As for Flagg, he has long been known to have an affinity for the Celtics, as a report from last July revealed he would binge-watch the 1986 Celtics team.
Although there are already reports confirming the Mavs will take him with the No. 1 pick, clearly other teams are doing their due diligence on the presumed generational prospect.
