As expected for nearly a year now, there had been little to no doubt that Cooper Flagg would be the No. 1 overall pick in the NBA draft — and the Dallas Mavericks wasted no time submitting their selection shortly after going on the clock at 8 p.m. EST.

But one of the most heartfelt moments of the night came just minutes later. While Flagg was sitting down with Taylor Rooks on NBA TV for a live interview in front of the stage, his Duke teammate — and college roommate — Kon Knueppel was selected No. 4 overall by the Charlotte Hornets.

The second Flagg heard Knueppel’s name, he jumped out of his chair and erupted with cheers, celebrating the milestone for his close friend.

"K Dot!! Let’s go! Oh my God! Let’s go!" Flagg shouted cheerfully. "It’s surreal. Kon was my roommate last year, so just to see him have that moment with his family — it’s insane. That really just gave me chills. That was amazing."

Fans reacted to Flagg cheering on his former teammate:

"These duke boys are rooting for each other, you love to see it," a fan said.

Someone else added, "BROTHERHOOD IS REALLLL."

Another fan posted, "I love this team so much I don’t think you guys understand."

"Coop is just a special dude," one more fan commented

Many believed Flagg would be the one to land with the Hornets prior to the NBA Draft Lottery. However, in a surprising twist, the Mavericks secured the No. 1 overall pick with just a 1.8% chance — and ultimately selected Flagg.

He now joins a Dallas team featuring three future Hall of Famers in Anthony Davis, Kyrie Irving, and Klay Thompson. Meanwhile, Knueppel heads to a young Charlotte Hornets squad that’s still trying to find its identity, led by LaMelo Ball and Brandon Miller.
