Dominant win keeps UConn hot at the right time

Associated Press No. 1 UConn played one of its best games of the season on Saturday against lowly Georgetown.

Sure, a win over the Hoyas doesn't mean as much this year, considering the loss dropped them to 1-11 in Big East play. Still, UConn's 89-64 win shows that last year's national champion winner is hitting its stride. The Huskies have won 12 consecutive games by an average of 14.3 points.

CBS Sports noted that their 25-point victory on Saturday was their largest road victory since 2016.

Sophomore forward Alex Karaban led the way with 24 points, including 4-of-7 from beyond the arc. The Huskies shot 61.1% from the field as a team.

UConn lost 2023-23 leading scorers Adama Sanogo and Jordan Hawkins to the NBA draft but has been even better this season.

On top of Karaban's improvement, the Huskies have also received significant contributions from transfer five-year senior guard Cam Spencer and Tristen Newton, who's in his second season at UConn after transferring from East Carolina.

UConn is seeking to become the first program since Florida (2006, 2007) to win back-to-back NCAA men's tournament national championships.

Per ESPN's Basketball Power Index, the Huskies (4.8%) have the sixth-best odds of cutting down the nets in Phoenix in April. According to ESPN Bet, only Purdue (+700) is a more likely national champion this season than UConn (+750).

The Huskies are a projected 1-seed in the upcoming NCAA tournament in ESPN's Joe Lunardi's most recent Bracketology. Last season, UConn entered the tournament as a four-seed.
