Florida Loses Key Player From Championship Team to Transfer Portal

In a stunning turn of events, the Florida Gators men’s basketball team faces a significant roster shakeup just days after celebrating a national championship. On3's Joe Tipton  announced that Denzel Aberdeen plans to enter the transfer portal, a move that has Gators fans reeling.

The 6-foot-5 playmaker, known for his breakout performances this season, including a 22-point outburst against the South Carolina Gamecocks and a 20-point effort against the Mississippi State Bulldogs, played a pivotal role in Florida’s title run. His departure marks a bittersweet moment for a program still basking in the glow of its recent triumph.

Aberdeen’s decision comes on the heels of the Gators' acquisition of Princeton transfer Xaivian Lee, a highly sought-after point guard, finalized just one day prior. Lee, a former high school teammate of Gator forward Thomas Haugh, is expected to fill the void left by departing stars like Walter Clayton Jr. and Alijah Martin.

While Lee’s addition bolsters the backcourt, Aberdeen’s exit creates a new challenge for coach Todd Golden, who now loses a versatile guard poised to take on a starting role next season.

The announcement shocked and disappointed many, as Aberdeen appeared poised to lead the Gators in the 2025-26 campaign. His ability to score in bunches and contribute defensively made him a fan favorite.

As the Gators navigate this unexpected loss, all eyes will be on Golden’s strategy to rebuild around Lee and the remaining core, ensuring the Gators remain a powerhouse in college basketball and contenders for another national championship.
