Former Alabama Crimson Tide forward Darius Miles is one step closer to a verdict on his capital murder charge.

Miles' basketball career came to a screeching halt in 2023 following the shooting death of Jamea Harris near the Alabama campus.

According to Nick Kelly of AL.com, a Tuscaloosa judge ruled in court that Miles' trial will commence on Dec. 1. Kelly also indicated the trial will last at least a week. The Tuscaloosa County District Attorney's office also offered Miles a plea deal this week.

The state of Alabama will try Miles on the heels of his former teammate, Michael Davis, being found guilty of capital murder in the death of Harris. Davis will serve life in prison without the possibility of parole. Miles is facing the same charge if found guilty.

ABC News reports Miles has claimed self-defense in a non-guilty plea, but has been denied a request to dismiss the case.

During the 2022-23 season, the Alabama Crimson Tide earned their first-ever one-seed in the March Madness Tournament. However, a dark cloud formed over the program midseason after a murder placed two Alabama Crimson Tide basketball players at the scene. The story took on a new life when superstar freshman Brandon Miller was linked to the gun that fatally shot the victim.

Nevertheless, Miles was released from the team shortly after the murder. He played in six games, scoring 1.5 points per game on 33% shooting. He spent three years with the Tide. His best season came in 2021-22, averaging 5.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 0.9 assists per game. He had four points and an assist in the team's 78-64 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the Round of 64.
