Jay Williams wasn't impressed by what he saw from North Carolina at the end of Tuesday night's game.
The Tar Heels fell to 13-9 with a 73-65 loss to Pittsburgh. North Carolina committed 14 turnovers and 19 fouls at Petersen Events Center and got outscored by 10 points in the second half.
While working the game for ESPN, Williams chastised UNC's perceived lack of fight in the game's closing minutes.
As ESPN showed Hubert Davis on the bench, play-by-play announcer Kevin Brown wondered what the Tar Heels head coach was thinking. Williams, a former Duke star, noted that UNC's players were staggered around the court during a timeout as Pittsburgh's team huddled.
"It already looks as if, with 24.9 seconds left to go, North Carolina being down only four points, that the game feels over," Williams said, via Awful Announcing. "None of them have huddled. None of them have talked to each other. This is what Hubert Davis has been talking about, Kevin, about the lack of leadership on this team."
As Pittsburgh made another free throw to increase the lead, Williams wanted to see better body language from the Tar Heels.
"I know you're down five, but you're never out of it until you're out of it," Williams continued. "But you need to have communication about what you're doing next, what you're going to run offensively, what you need to be in defensively, and there's no quit in your voice."
Ishmael Leggett made three more free throws to seal a Panthers victory. North Carolina has now lost three of its last four games.
The Tar Heels entered the season No. 9 in the AP poll, but they could be in danger of missing the NCAA tournament for the second time in three years. ESPN's Joe Lunardi has the ACC program as one of the last four teams in his bracket.
Davis hopes his team uses the rough patch as a learning experience.
"What choice do you have?" Davis said when asked about the team keeping its spirits up. "I love these kids. I love this team, and it's a great lesson for this group and this team. It's a great lesson for life, and I really believe that there is no choice. The choice is to get back up and step forward and continue to competitively fight and prepare and continue to improve."
Williams and the entire college basketball community will watch closely when Duke hosts UNC in a rivalry showdown this Saturday night on ESPN.
