Former Pitt basketball player Gary McGhee is currently retired from basketball, he told Pittsburgh Sports Now. 

Alongside fellow former Pitt players, McGhee recently launched “The Pitt Legends Show,” a podcast about college basketball, and specifically, Pitt and the ACC.

McGhee played for Pitt from 2007-11, earning 69 starts in his time with the Panthers. The 6-foot-11 center averaged 6.9 points and 7.7 rebounds per game as a senior at Pitt. He scored more than 500 points and hauled in more than 500 rebounds in his career at Pitt. McGhee is a native of Anderson, Indiana. He capped off his collegiate career with 120 games played while at Pitt.

McGhee’s career high in points while at Pitt was 13, which he scored on four separate occasions. He surpassed that number in rebounds, grabbing 15 rebounds in a game against DePaul once.

McGhee then went on to a lengthy professional basketball career, spending 13 years playing ball professionally. McGhee played in Turkey, Germany, France, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Mexico, Argentina, and Uruguay in his professional career, according to Proballers.

McGhee averaged at least eight points per game for 11 of the 15 teams that he played for professionally. He last played for Regatas Corrientes in Argentina, averaging 8.6 points per game and 8.1 rebounds per game. Statistically, McGhee’s best season professionally came in 2022-23, when he averaged 11.9 points and 12 rebounds per game in 23 games for Club Nacional de Montevideo in Uruguay.

McGhee was a part of four NCAA Tournament teams while at Pitt, and played in seven NCAA Tournament games in his collegiate career.
